If you are involved in SEO, then you are aware how important backlinks are. Whether those links are purchased or natural, you want to make sure your competition has a hard time assessing your link profile. This can be accomplished by inundating your link profile with sitewide links. Most search optimizers use Yahoo Site Explorer to view a pages link profile. The trick is to get over 1000+ links to that particular page you want to “protect”. Yahoo only shows you up to 1000 backlinks for any given page. It is worth noting no other service currently gives you a backlink profile up to par that yahoo does. MSN removed theirs, and googles is not accurate nor updates often. Since Google has now implemented a feature within webmaster central that facilitates the reporting of paid links, it is pretty easy for your competition to negate your efforts (there is no proof that they manually devalue your links but it could potentially happen, better safe than sorry). Ensuring your competition cannot simply do backlink checks via yahoo site explorer on your prime pages, without having to wade through hundreds of sitewide links, will only further protect your hard work. | |||||||

November 2007 Nice tactic, but it does sort of make the tool useless for you to use, if it is inundated with sitewide links.
One thing that I did notice is that yahoo seems to put the more highly ranked links at the top, so it could be argued that unless you best links were sitewide(which a really good site most likely isnt), this would still open the door for competition to research your links. Reply
