I come across so many booklets that I just know were written and designed with the assumption in mind that people are just going to want to read them no matter what. The booklets don’t really try to sell the information inside them as if the mere fact that the person got booklet printing done is enough to make me want to read further.
Booklets can take quite a while to read, and given that I’m not a very fast reader, that’s even more of my time I’m giving up and devoting to this single booklet. I have to be rather certain that I’m going to learn something good from it.
Take textbooks as a good example, or other kinds of books at stores covering in-depth subjects. I think these are perfect because they really aren’t that much different from your average booklet. Both are going to be covering details about a subject, and often both are going to be read based on the strength of the author.
Now, if you pick one of these up you’ll notice a few specific things about them on the cover and just on the inside. The back cover almost always describes the author, but also describes what other people have said about the author. Sometimes this refers directly to that one book, but often it just mentions that the author is an expert in his field, or knows a lot about the subject matter.
All of these also have the name and qualification of the person giving the endorsement, and all of these are really just testimonials to encourage someone to read. If these experts in the field think the person knows what they’re talking about, than maybe you should give him a chance as well.
Consider this the next time you get booklet printing done. Don’t just assume people will want to read, and instead take the time to let them know that you really do know what you’re talking about. There are many people getting booklets made, and a lot of those booklets don’t provide very much information.
Find some solid testimonials that you can use at the front of your booklet or on the back to get a person interested. Tell people what an expert you are in your industry or give examples of other works you’ve written or speeches you’ve given.
You might mention details about the company you work for and the job you perform, along with other things to give someone a greater insight into who you are and what you know about your subject.
I’ve seen booklets that mention a person was the head of a company that won a certain award, or something else that seems rather broad, but can still be used to represent the person’s knowledge and skill in the field.
You have to give people a good reason to take your booklet seriously. Don’t just talk about how great you are, but show people by letting them know who else agrees that you know your area.
