With an SEO strategy, is there really a better side to be on and what are the consequences? Are we creating a role of “good” versus “evil” when it comes to search engine techniques? Both sides are actually attempting to manipulate something, but does that make one side better over the other? Clearly search engines have a defined set of “rules” to follow and attempting to circumvent these rules can be costly. Take the instance of John Chow’s site. He recently lost his Google ranking for selling links – bad SEO strategy. No only did he lose his ranking but his credibility was shot as people came out of the wood works to comment on his demise. Googling “John Chow” now brings up “John Cow” which seems to be a spoof off the original site. Regardless, John Chow was effective when he was on top. The problem was that there was a price to pay with his strategy. Black hat SEO techniques are deceptive and mask’s the actual relevance of a site to search engines. When using a black hat strategy, you have to consider the consequences of your actions. It may take Google years to find you, but eventually, everything that goes around comes around. How do you determine which SEO strategies are considered black, white or gray? Sometimes it’s hard to tell especially when you’re new to the field. Dan Thies from SEO Fast Start writes an easy to understand explanation of what the different colored “hats” represent and how you can clean up your strategies to inherently become more “white hat”. Then there are the problems with the “no hats”. You know you’re a “no hat” if nothing is going on with your site – no visitors, no click-throughs, no comments. You’re lucky if you post on a consistent basis. Get on board the SEO train and start doing something with your site. Even if it’s black hat or somewhat gray, at least you’re doing something and you’re going somewhere. Now, we’re not advocating “black hat” techniques, but rather, the point is start doing something. SEO and SMO strategies are complex in nature and they take time to build. The original question was “whose side are you on” and “is there a better side”? The answer to that question would be another question, “how can you risk losing something that takes so long to build?” As for John Chow, don’t worry about him. He’ll be back. | |||||||||||||||||||

February 2008 I'm with boldadam on this one, develop unique, useful content and you'll survive. That is what the search engines want, and they will continually modify their algorithms to reward that type of content.
Then again, the whole issue of high rankings misses the essential point of online business. And that is, we want more business, not high rankings per se. Most sites already have plenty of traffic, they just aren't converting them into customers Sooner or later the smarter online operators are going to figure out that having 98 out of every 100 people leave their sites without doing some sort of business interaction is a serious problem that a high ranking simply won't fix. The 98% failure rate, by the way, is the average for most online businesses and has been stuck around that level for the past 10 years. Reply

October 2007 At some point people will get it. The key to the google algorithm is very simple. Google wants to return the most trusted and useful page as the #1 ranking for that keyword. If you want to be ranked #1. All you need to do is be the most trusted resource on that subject. Simple huh?
I can already hear you wining, "But wait, it's hard work to be useful to people and create a resource" or "But my business isn't more valuable than my competitors". Well tuff s--t kids. Get it in gear or get off the road. Reply

October 2007 It is amazing how many people do not know that they are using "black" hat SEO techniques. I worked with a company that got all excited because they had gotten ranked on a few words quickly using invisible text and keyword stuffing. They thought this was acceptable and had no idea that search engines would "ban" websites for using underhanded techniques.

October 2007 White hat and "greyish" hats are the only way to go. Follow the guidelines given by the engines http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=35769 The grey comes in because many of the guidelines are very vague, on purpose. Sometimes you have to test a grey area to see if it bumps up you up a few spots in rank. Do NOT deliberately go against the guidelines. If you can think of a way to trick the engines, they will eventually find it and penalize you. Instead spending months trying to trick the engines and eventually getting penalized, use that time to clean your site up and get ranked legitimately. Remember , Google knows everything http://www.gooruze.com/articles/51/Google-Knows-Everything/ Reply
