A backlink is simply a link to your site. Not all backlinks are the same. If you sell car tires and you get a backlink from a site that sells ice cream with the link text “click here,” yes it is a backlink, but it is not worth much. With backlinks, it is not the quantity, it’s the QUALITY that matters. So what makes a good quality backlink? First find sites related to your products or services. The higher the Google PR of the site, the better. Look for pages that have your products or services in the title and description tags. Look for pages that have your products or services in the body text of the page. When adding your link, use your product or service as the link text. Also, do not forget your internal pages. Try not to have all your backlinks going to your home page. Try to find sites to add backlinks to internal pages of your site. You sell 8x10 green widgets, then find sites with the most related content and have your link text “8x10 Green widgets” with the link going to your 8x10 green widgets page. | |||||||

December 2007 Al,
Not to pick on you, but maybe this need to be directed to the general population on this site: "Not all backlinks are created equal"? Isn't this site supposed to be targeted at experienced online marketers? I as because some of these articles are directed at more of a SEO 101 crowd. Where do I go to get the advanced topics on this site...you know, where the "gooruzes" hang out? -Allie Reply

December 2007 Hi allie - yes some of the articles on Gooruze are watered down for the masses but spare a thought for the prospective audience of this site (the people searching on Google for help with online marketing). If you want to know something more specific about a particular topic then maybe post a question in the Q&A section. Hopefully a Gooru or two might give you a detailed answer. Reply

October 2007 "The higher the Google PR of the site, the better."
I am going to have to disagree with you here Al :-) TBPR (toolbar page rank) is one of the most overrated if not THE most overrated factor in todays game. Heck, Google hasnt even done a TBPR update in 6+ months and counting. Reply

October 2007 I am not saying the PR is the greatest guage, but if I had the choice of 2 product related sites and one had a PR of 2 and the other PR 5, I would pick the 5. Reply

I still wouldn't even go that far for one main reason being its not updated enough to make a proper correlation like that. If it was updated once a week then perhaps. TBPR is a factor of age mainly. That PR 2 page might have obtained 5,000 quality backlinks since its last update but there is no way to reflect that with the green bar until the next update. I will give you the fact, however, that PR is a good starting place when assessing the value of a link, but you really cannot stop there. There are so many factors to assess. Most beginners just get stuck on Toolbar Page Rank and forget about other important factors. DP forum probably being the prime example of a community over indulged in googles toolbar page rank phenomenon. It is like a plague over there. Reply

October 2007 Speaking of Google PR. You have no idea how many times people have said to me, the higher the google PR the higher your site will be ranked. This is not true. PR is only one of the many factors Google uses to help them position your site. It is true that you can find lower Page Rank sites positioned higher in google because of all of the other factors invloved. Reply
