A backlink is simply a link to your site. Not all backlinks are the same. If you sell car tires and you get a backlink from a site that sells ice cream with the link text “click here,” yes it is a backlink, but it is not worth much.

With backlinks, it is not the quantity, it’s the QUALITY that matters.

So what makes a good quality backlink?

First find sites related to your products or services. The higher the Google PR of the site, the better.
a) Search your product in Google with the word “directories” added to it.
b) Search your product or service in Google and see if any sites are informational sites and would be a good fit for you to add your site to.
c) And my personal favorite, search you product or service in Google, then take the top 10 sites and go to Yahoo. In Yahoo put link: and the url. This shows all the backlinks to your ranking competitors. Change the drop down to show external links only, and you now have a list of thousands of high quality sites to submit your site to.

Look for pages that have your products or services in the title and description tags.

Look for pages that have your products or services in the body text of the page.

When adding your link, use your product or service as the link text.
For example: If this site discussed golf and golf clubs, it would beneficial for a site that sold used golf clubs to add a link with "Used Golf Clubs" in the link text.

Also, do not forget your internal pages. Try not to have all your backlinks going to your home page. Try to find sites to add backlinks to internal pages of your site. You sell 8x10 green widgets, then find sites with the most related content and have your link text “8x10 Green widgets” with the link going to your 8x10 green widgets page.
