I have seen several posts so far within the community that have mentioned PR (google’s page rank). I felt it was worth pointing out the differences between googles toolbar page rank, the big green pixels on your google toolbar, and page rank that is used behind the scenes, as an algorithmic factor. This article is even more valid after Google unleashed a TBPR smackdown on many credible websites. PR – Page rank Google’s page rank, also known as link juice is the culmination of backlinks to a site. Over time the amount of page rank you have, grows, or subsequently falls due to various reasons. The higher your pagerank is the more pages google will crawl on your site and the increased frequency in which they will visit your site. The actual number of your page rank is only known by google, inside the googleplex. No one outside google knows what the exact Page rank of a given page is at any one point. TBPR – Toolbar page rank This is the page rank displayed on your google toolbar. It is generally update by google once every 4 months. However we have not had a full update now for 6+ months and counting. Its value is vague and often irrelevant. It varies from datacenter to datacenter and is never in “real” time. A page could have a PR 6 score but show TBPR of only 2 because it has not been updated in months. TBPR is a vanity stat in today’s game and should not be relied on for any valuable meaning. | |||||||

October 2007 Yo Bri - I wrote a rant about the whole TBPR crap almost a year ago and launched more than a few threads at DP and elsewhere.... I gave up trying to explain that even the TRUE internal PageRank is but one of many ranking factors, so it is a less than valued metric... plain and simple.... arg... I freakin HATE the PR furor.... Oh and for those who care, Google re-relased the PageRank patent and I had a run around the 2 - a Tale of 2 PageRank Patents Reply

October 2007 I would speculate b/c google doesnt want people to know the REAL pr of a page. The real pr of a page is there almighty, all secret formula. They have to protect it.

January 2008 I've read somewhere that it takes ages for the page rank calculation to run. Because it has to be repeated so many times to reach an accurate result, a definitive rank just isn't there most of the time. I don't know if this is true though...

October 2007 Ok. Sorry I correlated the 1 ranking and the posting of the comment as one and the same :)
Apparently someone doesn't like page rank (cant say I blame them, haha) Yea, when I wrote the article I felt it was very basic. The article you posted def goes into more depth if people want to go there. Reply

October 2007 Grab a cup of coffee, meditate for 20 minutes, then 30 minutes of Tai-chi, relax and totally clear your mind... Then read this Google PR link Reply
