This week, some bloggers are in a frenzy about the Google PageRank update. If you don’t know what PageRank is, it’s Google’s way of saying how authoritative a site is, based on incoming links. This week, some very popular blogs with thousands of readers were “devalued.” The thing is, PageRank doesn’t even affect a site’s rankings in Google’s own search engine. The only thing it has been good for is bloggers claiming how awesome they are and exchanging/selling links as a result. Far too many bloggers have placed far too much faith in PageRank, to the point of letting it establish the worth of their blog - and dare I say it, the worth of themselves as bloggers. But true authority is measured far differently, and there are as many different measurements as there are bloggers. You can measure RSS subscribers, traffic, or comments. Or you can be more abstract and measure your own personal gain of knowledge on a particular subject. The bottom line is that determination of authority begins with you. You’re the very first person who must believe in yourself before anyone else will. Don’t let a search engine tell you otherwise. | |||||||

October 2007 so PR gives no indication of how much Google trusts your website/webpages... and plays no part in how they rank your site in their index?
![]() I find this hard to comprehend, considering they came up with this measure. Reply

October 2007 Clay,
PR hasn't been a solid determining factor in determining rankings for some time now. Basically, the PR engine is the closest thing to the original google link based algo. Whatever they are using now is much more complex and no longer affected by PR. PR is a separate indicator and a separate analysis tool. Think about Alexa or Compete. Sure they are tools, and we use them because we have no other way to quickly measure value in the public space, but man are they inaccurate and unreliable. Pagerank is the same way. It's just another publicly available indicator. I would go out on a limb and say that, in most cases, the people who have lost pagerank aren't whining about lost organic placement or traffic. If you place bets and make investments based on PR and Alexa rankings, I have some wonderful oceanfront property in oklahoma to sell you. Reply

October 2007 Exactly. PageRank isn't a measure of the popularity or SERP of a page but rather Google's measure of what it thinks is the authority of a page based on the linkages it finds in there. Wikipedia has a detailed explanation of how PageRank is supposed to work: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PageRank PageRanks and SERPs are not related. Do a search in Google, check out each of the results, and you will see that a low PageRank page/site can be positioned higher than a high PageRank page/site. We seem to be overreacting over this. Google updates PageRanks once every 3 months. They own Google Search, they have the right to do what they want with it. Next time round, PageRanks may very well go the other way. If your page/site/blog has constant, fresh, quality content, it'll position high in the SERPs no matter what your PageRank. The ones who are miffed about this are probably those selling links or sites based mainly on PageRank. Not a good criteria to base a purchase on anyway. Reply
