To add to Matt Mcgee Meta tag post, http://www.gooruze.com/articles/192/SEO-Basics-Meta-Tags/ another good thing to know is how to block Yahoo Directory and DMOZ descriptions from showing up for your search results.

For those of you that have no idea what I am talking about, sometimes when you add your site to the Yahoo Directory or DMOZ, those Directorytitles and descriptions get used instead of your more user friendly ones within your site. Usually in DMOZ you can only add thename of your site as your title and the description can not have call to actions or have offers in it. Sometimes when you search your site, these DMOZ or Yahoo Directory tags show up instead of the title and description tag in the HTML of your site.

Let me also add, the DMOZ and Yahoo Directory tags showing up do not effect your positioning what so ever. You want to be in those directories but the tags showing up in the search results only effect the potential customer possibly not clicking on your link because it is bland.

Now to tell the engines to show your sites tags rather than the directories you can:

Add this tagwithin the <head> of your home page to tell the engines not to use yahoo directory description and title.

Add this tagwithin the <head> of your home page to tell the engines not to useDMOZ description and title.

Adding these tags should not effect your ranking in any way.
