Nothing Worse Than An Internet Marketer Scorned

Wrtgrls post about a blogger posting Spirit airlines poor customer service got me thinking about how employers and retailers need to be more careful.

Before you terminate your internet marketing person or upset a customer that happens to be an internet marketer, you better think twice.

Many things have changed since the internet. I have seen blog posts that an seo writer wrote after being terminated. Ex-employees writing about their previous employment is nothing new, except the posts are from disgruntled internet marketing employees and they show up when you search for your company’s name. I know of a specific example where a spouse of a very experienced internet marketer was terminated from employment. A SEO friendly blog post went up on a high quality blog and the post ended up in the top 3 of all major search engines when you searched for the company’s name talking about why the company sucked.

I hate to say it, but I have done something similar myself. A little while ago, I had work done on my house. I ended up being charged about twice what I should have. I asked to speak with the owner, but he would not return my calls or emails. A few weeks went by and I finally received contact from him. It was his lawyer demanding payment. I ended up paying about $150 more than I should have been.To avoid a day in small claims court or having collections people harassing me I paid it. So what did I do? Within 30 minutes of writing the check, I created a blog, posted a couple of paragraphs about what happened and why no one should use this company, went into my adwords account and set up a campaign, adgroup with an ad and link to my blog post. The ad received several clicks a day and cost me only 5 cents a click because it was a small local company. I shut it down only after a few days. Total cost, about $2.50. If I REALLY wanted to, I could have completely dominated the natural results as well. They would end up having to call Andy Beal for reputation management help :)

Again, not proud of it, but another good example of why you have to watch how you treat your customers and employees, you never know who they are or what they do.

I would like to hear of other stories any of you have seen, or did, to relay your employment or customer service displeasures.

Just goes to further show (not that we all didn't already know it but anyhoo) that the internet is a powerful medium.

It could backfire on you, though, if it has to do with employment - I've heard of things like employers googling potential employees as a screening mechanism of sorts, and if that happened and your potential employer found you completely trashing your previous employer in your blog... I'd say you might be kissing that job goodbye.

EXCELLENT point!  More and more employers are doing this.  Might not want to put your negative post on a personal blog and try to remain anonymous when posting elsewhere.

A few months ago I wrote this article about a bad experience with Sensis  - not quite what you're talking about because I showed them a draft and published their comments too. Made me feel better at the time and put their incompetence on the web for posterity, but really made no difference to the world at all.

You wrote, "Made me feel better...."  It made me feel better as well only because I felt as if they stole money from me.

If theres one thing the Internet has allowed for, its a complete scope of exactly what a company is actually like and what reputation they have, not just how pretty they look in their advertisements! well done.

Just on the Internet Marketing employee part... I think it is unfair for employees who are bloggers to hold their employers to ransom. ie: if you fire me I will blog about how crap your company is.

Clay, I agree.  I dont think I have ever heard of anyone holding their employer ransom (though I am sure it has happend).  I am speaking more of things like an employer treating an employee like crap then firing them unjustly.  Ten years ago it would not be a big deal.  Today is different.

It cost more than $2.50 if you factor in the opportunity cost of your time - good idea though.

You could have written a negative review on Angieslist, but your approach to crush them with your Adwords skills was immediate and effective, and extremely satisfying, I'm sure!

angieslist is more permanant. I actually just wanted to use adwords to deter about $150 in sales from them to equal my $150 loss.  Once I felt that was achieved, I stopped the ads.  See, I am a nice guy :)

so true Al - giving people an uncensored voice, as social media has done, always comes with its risks...the challenge for modern businesses is how best to engage in such conversations...going on the defensive can be just as bad as saying nothing...

Great post, Bert.

That is a great idea. I wonder how much business they lost? It could be huge if you ran it for a few days. Heck, geo-target that ad and just crush them in the area in which they do business.

and in the future...i know a great carpenter...so don't go with some local redneck.

you could just as quickly set up a profile on one of the many social profile sites, such as ziki.com, and explain your circumstances.

I did that for someone who ripped me off on ebay. Def. not a good idea to screw over an SEO :-)

Brian,

This is the first I heard of ziki.com.  Do you know of other sites like this?
