Understanding "Allinanchor" to Improve Google Ranking

by rene-lemerle Expert(May 23rd) (rank 5th)

Google has several "search operators" that provide important insights into improving search engine rankings. One of the most important commands is "Allinanchor" as it heavily influences Google's ranking algorithm - by providing relevance to inbound links.

Allinanchor is a Google search command that searches for internet pages that contain inbound links with a certain keyword in their anchor text. Anchor text is the text used in the link back to a website. For example, if you see a link on a web page that looks like this: Search Engine Marketing, then the anchor text is "Search Engine Marketing".

The reason allinanchor search is so important is that is shows a list of web pages that have a high volume of inbound links with a particular keyword. There is a strong correlation between the allinanchor results for a "term" and the general Google web results for the same term.

To highlight the importance of allinanchor on rankings, one of the key search terms that my company ineedhits optimizes for is "fast google inclusion". As you can see from the images below, we're the number one ranking for the term on both "allinanchor" and Google's normal web search.

While this is not the case 100% of the time...it occurs in more cases than not...really highlighting the importance of anchor text in your inbound links.

To conduct an allinanchor search, simply use the following in the Google search box:
Allinanchor:[your search term] (e.g. allinanchor:fast google inclusion]

It's well known that "ethical" link building is one of most important factors in improving your ranking in Google. While you focus on getting inbound links to your website (in a natural way), remember that the anchor text plays a vital role in your Google ranking success. Use allinanchor to help monitor your progress and also keep an eye on your competition.

Great post.  Question for anyone who may have a suggestion.  It seems that this strategy is very beneficial for a site which is using a handful of keyword search terms.  How affective would this tool be, or how would this type of strategy apply, if some one's main approach is actually a 'long-tail'  approach?

This is our strategy and has been highly effective at delivering organic search traffic to our site.  However our "net" of keywords is so wide I'm not sure how I can use a resource like this without conductin 100's of 1000's of individual searches.  Any thoughts on how the Allinachor could apply to this scenario?

Thanks for writing about this.  I didn't know about allinanchor.  I've just tried it out and it could be really useful to me.  I also notice that the positions of my pages for allinanchor are similar to the positions for the search terms alone.

Please keep posting advice like this!

Great post.

I know that text based links with descriptive anchor text are great asset in the SEO arsenal, but thinking about affiliates who may use image based links to link through to your site - does using the alt or title tag associated with the link also increase the quality of the inbound link?

excellent post Rene. I had no idea this existed.

I see that Minti is not in the first 10 results pages for allinanchor:parenting which gives me a clue as to why it's not ranking well for a "parenting" search. So here's one link at least that gives it a parenting boost

I wonder if there is a way to list your top 10 inbound link terms? Do you know? Does anyone else have ideas?

Here is a search for allinanchor:sem

Notice how the top 4-5 results are the same...

take all this with a grain of salt guys.

I can show you 30+ results where this isn't the case. Links are very critical, but not the end all be all.

if they were my job would be very, very easy

very true Brian...but the correlation between allinanchor and google's ranking are so similar on so many searches...that it's difficult to dismiss it...but you're right - there are a plethora of other factors that influence rankings "too"...

If you just want to know the top terms (keywords not phrases) presently linking to your site. Google Webmaster tools has what I think you are looking for.

It will list the top terms linking to your site in general and does some page specific analysis as well.

It used to be called Google Sitemaps. Now it's Webmaster Tools.

You feed them a google sitemap and they do all kinds of killer analysis and give up all kinds of data about your site.

Let me know how that works out for you.

@boldadam - you're right!

For others...
  1. Go to your Google Webmaster Tools acct.
  2. click "statistics"
  3. click "what Googlebot sees"
  4. and it lists from most frequent the text linking to your domain.
Very cool. Now wonder Minti isn't that good on 'parenting'

Solid piece that a lot of link wh---, er, hounds, need to see.   If one more non-tech/non-marketer winks at me and says, "It's all just dot gov and dot edu, isn't it?"

Er, no.

Well done, Rene.  A nice primer, and I see from the comments that you've already helped educate one of our community.  That's great.

Rene,

Great article.  I never heard the term "Allinachor" before, but your article further explains why with backlinks, it isnt the quantity, it is the quality http://www.gooruze.com/articles/165/Not-All-Backlinks-Are-Created-Equal/ of the links you should be looking for.

Nice article which does explain alinanchor.  I personally use alinanchor to check how my web site is doing with its links. When I place my site in directories I try to tittle it with Cosmetic Dentist New York-Dr Lawrence Spindel .  I assume that this will help my alinanchor for Cosmetic Dentist New York.
