Gooruze seems to be doing pretty well so far. UGC is rampant and there is a solid amount of activity, comments, articles, and news postings. Now just because the community is strong at the moment, doesn’t mean it will prevail in the long run. In my opinion the definition of failure for a social community of this nature is stagnation, spamming and gaming, lack of technical effort/ response to community enhancements, poor UI/display and overall clunkyness. Stagnation – This simply implies in order for a social community such as Gooruze to thrive you need constant involvement. If there is lack of community interaction, there will be a dwindling interest in the network, and the network will subsequently collapse. This is probably the most vital aspect. Spamming and gaming – Spamming and gaming in any online environment is never a good thing. This is especially critical in a social environment where human interaction and tolerance is at a prime. Gooruze relies on an inherent algorithm to rank members. If it found to be too easily gamed, then it will not create the right harmony needed to entice interaction. On the same token if Gooruze is spammed with low quality material then that could also have a detrimental effect. Lack of technical effort/ response to community enhancements – Whenever you launch a new site there are going to be snafus along the way. It is how you manage and respond to those snafus that make a difference. Quickly responding to community enhancements is a vital proponent to keeping the site abreast. If the developers are not keen to listen and respond, then you might see a diminishing audience as frustration mounts. Poor UI/Display and overall clunkyness – A clunky UI is never a good thing. What do I mean by a clunky User Interface? Most people want to find what they are looking for, FAST! If they have a hard time finding what they are looking for, within a few clicks, then they are more than likely going to abandon the site. A site such as Gooruze, is the kind of website where you can end up spending a lot of time. Usability is absolutely pertinent. You need to be able to access information quickly, without having to click around all over the place. A lot of this may seem like common sense. When in reality, it really is. None the less, these points I feel are critical for the success of Gooruze going forward. | |||||||

November 2007 I would say my concern would be this...
Seems like out of the 500+ members, only about 10 members post unique original articles. Then about 50 post a sentence or two with a link to their own blog or news elsewhere. Then the other 440+ do not post anything.
I would love to see more people contribute and a lot more original articles. The articles do not have to be long. Write about personal experiences with different marketing channels, paid search tips, SEO tips, testing results, SEO Copywriting, etc...

November 2007 Good point. I think one critical factor for continued success within the community is the chance to personally interact with some of the more well known marketers in our industry, who just happen to be some of the "founders" of gooruze. More posting = more interaction.

November 2007 Some have their blogs automatically upload daily..and the posts aren't even by them....nor do they comment about it. I hope they
i hope they decide to take part in something they took the time to found. Reply

November 2007 Absolutely - I'm not sure how much is apathy and how much is voyerism but I agree - it would be great to see more people posting and getting involved even if just to comment.

Al good point, however I would expect just that to occur. The site is still very young and as time goes on I imagine more and more"active" users will join. The sites been live, for what 2 weeks now? Doing pretty good I would say so far. Reply

November 2007 Also, never underestimate Apathy. Like all clubs (and Gooruze is a club) - you'll find the vast majority of members are passive. Only a small proportion 'do' anything. if you look at the number of people who've registered with Gooruze and look at the number who haven't done much except look, you can see my point. It's not a moan - just a fact of having a club. Whether online or offline - similar apathy rules apply. Reply

November 2007 Clay,
My biggest hardship is keeping up with the threads that I am participating in. The watch list is too clunky and incomplete. I would love to see the latest action on posts for which I have contributed and not yet seen. So, any action on a thread since my last visit to that thread.
Remember, features on this site are not for the community but for each individual. If you help us be more ego centric and make us feel like the site is growing around us, we will all be more likely to want to contribute.
Right now I feel like the community is happening but that I can't see very clearly how the community is happening around my contributions to it.

November 2007 I agree with boldadam...I'd like an easier way to keep up with threads I'm following and to see comments that have come after mine. The Watchlist is helpful, but I would like a way to update it so that comments I have already seen are removed from it and not included in the Watchlist each time.

November 2007 actually just on this topic.
does anyone have a great example of the perfect watchlist in action so we can review it? My personal favorite is Tangler's watch list. Has anyone else got experience with Tangler's? If not, join up to Tangler and check it out by joining some popular groups and watch how it alerts you of new activity. Reply

November 2007 Thanks for the post. And let us not forget the most critical factor - the community. The community creates the heartbeat - as a newbie you need to all feel welcome, it can't be so early adopter that you feel like your "on the outer" but also not full of really lame stuff that you don't feel inclined to come back. That is what I love so far about gooruze - the contributions have been far less technical than some forums and yet a daily dose of gooruze is helping me stay up-to date and mentally stimulated. Not to mention I love the globalisation - being in remote Perth, Australia - it isn't easy to get to the conferences. With gooruze I feel connected to people with similar passion. Of course a healthy addictive element is also always a magic ingredient. Reply

November 2007 Agree that it's a good post. I'll tell you that it's not a substitute for the eighty gazillion blogs, but this is a nice twist on a forumsc concept with some smart people around who don't just fling posts around. That is what is keeping me coming back and slowly starting to participate.
One thing about the UI. If this site weren't home to a bunch of web-savvy folks, I would agree. As it is, I think UI is probably a nice-to-have at launch. (shrug) Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm looking for content and news first. Hmm, integrating a reader.... Reply

November 2007 Hi George,
Great input. Maybe one day we will replace the need for the eighty gazillion (online marketing) blogs everyone has to try and follow ![]() It sounds like you think our UI is fine as we have web savvy users? So you can get to what you are looking for fast enough? Cheers Clay Reply
