Wikia Wikia Wikia Wack!

Wikipedia was brought into this world by Jimbo Wales, a man who must have rendered any type of depression impossible by the fact that the terms “wikipedia” and “wiki” are among the top ten Googled searches on the Internet today. And as you read this, Wikipedia’s brother is slowly making its way down Wales’ birth canal.

Jimbo Wales’ eponymous contradiction sets the tone for the prenatal project when put under the scrutiny of his philosophy. The name ‘Jimbo’ resonates the cacophony of a southern twang among the more prestigious surname of royalty like the open source search engine he’s creating reverberates from his self-pronounced Objectivism.

Surveys and studies are showing that the globe is increasingly dissatisfied with their search engine results. Which search engines are they using? Google. Just about half of the world’s search traffic takes the trusted and familiar avenue of Google. And it seems few of us are happy with the results. Wales is determined to duplicate, improve and deprecate Google.

Wales’ idea is to, at least for the time being, adopt his approach to Wikipedia to that of Wikia – it’s completely open to the public. With members formerly employed by some of the most reputable search engines, MIT alumni and agoraphobic techies, the first steps have already been taken.

First, they must replicate the process of Google, which could take years. Then they have to figure out a way to allow the public to determine which results are shown instead of relying solely on an algorithm.

I’m not nearly as optimistic as Wales in giving complete trust to the good of mankind to bring us unaltered, unbiased, relevant search results. Look at dmoz.

Nevertheless, this pioneer of precious search purity wages on. His estimated time of development is 5 years. I welcome the change. Perhaps this will be the first usurpation of search marketing history.

Ultimately I don't know anyone who would use the site as a primary source.  Is it a fast place to grab a map or something encylopedic?  Sure.  Want to get an idea of when a TV show ran and don't feel like drilling through IMdb?  Absolutely.

But I look at the edits and the talk pages and the holes and get concerned when I see people use Wikipedia as their sole source.  Unfortunately, too many web sites that look authoritative used Wikipedia as their sole source, never attributed the site and a kid researching a paper shows them as corroborating each other.

I'm still conflicted as to whether Wikipedia or PhotoShop is responsible for more misinformation each day! ;-)

Interesting topic to say the least! You gotta wonder why wikipedia has chosen to not monetize its site all these years. Something else up there sleeves perhaps?
