Political Campaigning With Social Media

by ggallucci Expert(November 2007) (rank 11th)

Television ads and radio ads are always certain to be the first form of advertising when a politician runs for office. It's the best way to get the message to the people they are representing. Now a new form of media has emerged. Social media. Social media which is based on the use of the internet and the tools people can use.

Political campaigning with social media is not really all that new. It has been used for at least seven years to rally voters and gain financial supporters. Petitions have been sent to congressmen and senators. People were rallied together to fight a common injustice. Groups were formed to generate interest in what was happening on Capitol Hill. This was usually done with e-mails and solitary web sites. Now every avenue of social media is being utilized.

Social networking sites have become popular with many of the presidential hopefuls for the 2008 election. Most of these candidates have someone in their family or organization who set up a profile page on places like MySpace and Facebook. The thought behind this is to get the younger voter interested in politics and get their vote. In many cases this is working.

Political campaigning with social media formats has reached people by the millions. E-mails can be sent out. Blogs can be written. People can be asked to show their support using social media ideas. These same people are reaching others by way of e-mails and personal blogs. Sharing sites like You Tube and Flikr are allowing people to share photos and videos of the rallies and events being held by the candidates. There are times when some of these social media avenues have generated more than 250,000 people to sign petitions. Other campaigning efforts spurred one video straight to the top with over 350,000 views.

What's happening is a set of mini campaigning efforts. Each week the politicians are choosing topics related to public events and commenting on them. The people can log onto the profile pages of the social networking sites to see what the candidates have to say about the issues. The readers can then comment, tell others, or link directly back to the profile page from their own pages. This type of grassroots campaigning has reached more people than anyone thought was possible.

The people are responding well to this campaigning tactic. They like being able to interact with the politicians. They enjoy feeling like they are making a difference in the political scene. Political campaigning with social media avenues are bringing the face of politics in a new direction. Social media content can be more focused. It can address a more direct audience. It can change the way we look at campaigning in the future.

Politicians who are taking advantage of the social media campaigning efforts are seeing a marked difference in how their popularity has changed. With so many candidates becoming household names, the face of politics is changing forever with social media. Political campaigning with social media has become the way of the future for all candidates.
