Lessons in link-baiting

by onlineprguy Expert(November 20th) (rank 9th)

Last night I posted an open letter to Guy Kawasaki, questioning his use of Twitter to over-promote his Truemors site (a great site, by the way). I posted the article on my blog and here at Gooruze.

I was quickly told I was out to linkbait by several trusted people in this industry, and as that was not my intent, I removed the post on my blog and here on Gooruze.

My intent was conversation-baiting: What should the rules of social media be across the board? Wouldn't over-promotion be one of the universal rules not to break?

I can simply block Guy on Twitter; I'd rather not. I follow him for a reason - a glimpse into his insights. The cool or inspiring tweets between Truemors promotions.

Finally I'd ask - what is linkbaiting? Every time someone writes a post with the intent to draw in readers and create conversations = that's a form of linkbaiting no? Who writes a post thinking, "Man, I hope no one reads this or links to me!"

The beauty of social media is I've already learned volumes between last night and this morning, thanks to several diverse perspectives. I was hoping a conversation would take place on my blog; it took place through IMs, emails and social forums instead.

As always, debate and comments welcome. Vince Bank www.darwinpr.com

great point. hard to know when your crossing the line. a lot of bloggers even suggest link baiting to draw crowds. I guess I'm more of a purist, but its sometimes its hard to determine the line between controversial content up for discussion, or blatant bait for traffic.

as i side note, I had to remove scoble's lifestream from my feedreader...too much twittering. hard to keep up.

Vince,

I agree 100% with BrianChappell below.
  1. loved your guy kawasaki post. hope you can put it back up, i certainly didnt see it as link-baiting.
  2. i followed guy on twitter a couple months back but removed him almost immediately due to all his truemors posts. by the way, i think his blog is starting to get cramped with too much truemors stuff also.
Cheers
Clay

I read your article Vince, it was far from link baiting. Like you said you were simply trying to engage Guy and gather a few comments about his tactics on Twitter. I am sorry you felt the need to take it down, it was a very valid post.

On a side note, I simply cannot take all the Treumor posts. I am removing Guy from twitter as we speak. He just does it too often.

Vince - it's always a challenge trying to keep everyone happy (so it's not worth the bother sometimes)...

having not had the opportunity to read the posts in question, i can't say whether i think the articles were blatant link-baiting, or a clever conversation starter...but at the end of the day - the links you attract will determine whether the content was link worthy...and that's the key.

It's like the old challenge of artists trying to remain true to their independent roots...the minute they are successful, they're considered a commercial sellout...but heck - if it appeals to the people, then who cares what the critics call it.

Thanks for your comments: My original post is back up at DarwinPR

The direct link is here:  Should that link not work it's on my blog near top, titled "Open letter to Guy Kawasaki."
