In-House SEO: Top 5 ways your own engineers can screw you

by danlondon Expert(November 2007) (rank 3rd)

1. Changing URL structure. My engineers decided change about 275 urls one day. Didn't tell me. This caused me to pause the campaigns and check every single URL
2. Taking the site down for maintenance. My engineers took the site down for what was supposed to be an hour...it turned into 8. The spend to a "website down" page was very high.
3. Deleting pages. They took down over 100 pages without telling me. This caused ads to go to error pages.
4. Taking the last of the coffee and not making more. Bastards.
5. Changing the registration process. Some of my campaigns are geared toward getting registrations. The changed the entire process. This caused the conversions to alarmingly decrease, and thus the CPCs went high.

I'll add one: Making decisions on your behalf/not including you in decision making. Happens everywhere.

my Hatfields vs McCoys articles come full circle http://www.gooruze.com/articles/120/Hatfields-vs-McCoys/  :)

I know I dont have all the info, but I feel the head of your marketing department is to blame.  He/she obviously does not have a clue about seo and ppc and has no interest in learning about it and how important it is.

Dont forget, when your site was down, they changed they urls, and they removed pages without telling you, I bet your PPC campaigns were running full blast, possible to some of those deleted pages.  People were clicking to dead pages.  NICE!

The lack of SEM knowledge of decision makers is staggering.

I click on PPC adds a LOT to get general ideas of how people are working their PPC game. I cannot tell you how many times people are linking straight to the home page or even better to dead pages.

"4. Taking the last of the coffee and not making more. Bastards."

That probably needs to be ranked as #1
