Political Blogs

by ggallucci Expert(November 2007) (rank 11th)

It used to be when someone wanted to write about what was going on in their lives they kept a diary. This is where we kept the secrets we did not want anyone to know about. These were the things we always wanted to say in conversations but were too polite or too scared to say. Those days are over with the coming of the BLOG. It started out as a log of information technicians would use to share discoveries about data and technology. The public did not keep it that way.

There are blogs about parenting, dating, family matters, religion, and even politics. It is the political blogs that are making an impact right now. It is one year from the presidential election in 2008 and everyone is jumping on this new form of social media. The candidates themselves are using politcal blogs to get their message out to the people. I assume that the candidates actually have communications specialists if not writing the blogs, heavily involved.

There are 508 registered political blogs on the Internet at the moment. This does not include the personal political blogs people have put on their own web pages. The political blogs which are registered range from the conservative to the humorous. You can find ones listed under liberal headings and others listed as independent. There are moderate ones, religious ones, and even news only ones.

Politicians like Hillary Clinton and John Edwards have their own blogs. Groups which support the candidates are now using political blogs to rally voters to support the politicians. Political blogs are cropping up everywhere. Each one of them has a message to tell. These political blogs can be humorous satires of the issues in George Town or serious information the general public needs to be aware of.

The political blogs are written by numerous people. There are professional analysts who report their views and there are professional comedians taking their pokes at the candidates. Either one can make for good reading. What you get out of it is up to you. One blog states it this way, “...for those who don't believe everything they read but read it anyway”.

Four years ago it was reported that 8 million Americans had started blogging. Today 27% of Internet users report that they read blogs or blog themselves. With this kind of activity, it is no wonder political blogs have become a key element in where people are getting their information. More and more people are getting involved with the political issues because of political blogs.

The political blogs are doing something else, as well. They are reaching a younger group of people. College students are becoming active in politics today, when not too many years ago the same age groups could not tell you who the presidential hopefuls even were. Political blogs have changed that.

Political blogs have drawn attention from across the board. Everyone has something to say about some issue facing the politicians. This may be human rights, gun control, homeland security, or one of the many other issues we face. Political blogs are making an impact on people. Even people who do not like to read are checking out the political blogs on the Internet.
