Press releases arean important component of PR. Typically, I focus on writing the right headline to catch a reporter’s attention, while crafting intelligent quotes for my spokesperson. But sometimes, a catchy headline and eloquent phrasing may fall short of helping your client from a marketing and search engine optimization (SEO)perspective.
Here are my top five tips to SEO your press release: 1)Keywords:Collaborate with your clientto understand what their key terms areforSEO.The goal is not to use all of these words in your release, but rather how these terms may be applied based on the topic of your release. 2) Title Tags: This is the description that appears when you navigate to a web page. Many search engines weigh title tags heavily for ranking the content of the site. By understanding your client’s general key word groupings, you can craft a title tag that a) includes these keywords and b) accurately describes the content of the press release. 3) Meaningful URLs: How the URL is structured helps from a SEO perspective. Leverage the keywords to develop a meaningful URL that also describes the point of the release. I recommend keeping this to 4-6 words maximum and using underscores in between each word. Example: /gooruze_launches_marketing_social_network 4) Header, subhead, first paragraph: These three elements of your release are important for search engines to evaluate the content of your release. Balance the use of keywords with your client’s messages. Though keyword density (the number of times a keyword appears in the release) is important, don’t overdue as it may be seen as trying to game the search engines. 5) News Wires: If you client is incorporating SEO, thenconsider payingextra money to SEO your press release. Why? Since the release is distributed to various sites, this can increase the number of links pointing to your client’s website. Since the boilerplateis included in every release, the boilerplate is a great way toincorporatekeywords and appropriate links for SEO. | |||||||

December 7th To add onto this:
Create a directory for an archive of all press releases - creates more optimized content for your website, adds linkable content to your site, a common social media optimization tactic and it should strengthen the theming of your site overall. Submission - you seemed to start to get into this, but make sure you syndicate it. Most services provide it within their cost. There are a lot of free PR submission sites out there, so start a list and submit to each of them. Reply

December 6th Good advice! I would highly recommend optimizing press releases (you're nuts if you don't) - it ads so much value (that's easily measurable) to your campaigns and clients. Using SEO-friendly press release distribution sites will really increase the overall result. I've written a couple of posts about press release optimization, including a list of SEO-friendly services here. Some are actually free. PR Web, in my opinion, is the best. It allows you to track and monitor the press release too! Cheers, Jake Challenor.
