Doing It With Squidoo! Before It Gets Too Fishy...

by AdamDavis Founding Gooru(October 2007) (rank 59th)

Hello my fellow Marketing Pilots, Thought i'd share with you my thoughts on Seth Godin's new creation - Squidoo.

Squidoo has been in the news lately for their on-going battle with Google to have their members "niche articles" (a.k.a "lenses" in squidoo-talk) shown in Googles search results...

In fact just a few months ago Squidoo's listings were popping up left right and centre for all sorts of terms that the community was writing about, from Polar Bears to Princess Diana- however now it seems that Google has deflated their "relevancy" and search ranking for various topics (and ultimately Seth Godins ego i'm sure)...kidding!

However FEAR NOT - because that doesn't mean Squidoo is obsolete, dead, extinct oror any other word I can find in the Thesaurus that means something similar, in fact, it is a website you should not only know more about but be involved with because it is possible to drive traffic to your website using this site, but before I get into that - here's a run down of what Squidoo is all about:

1. Squidoo acts as a platform to allow people to share their passions with the world - it's motto is "everyones and expert on something".

2. The basic idea is that you choose a topic you feel you know something about and create the best possible write up on your chosen topic as you possibly can- Squidoo assists you by allowing you to plug in applications like Wikipedia, YouTube, Amazon and Ebay just to name a few.

3. Squidoo helps its community generate money through a co-op arrangement where you recieve money for your expertise (although I doubt this will actually take off - so far its been a year and the top earner has $30 apparently, but I may be eating my words as it starts to gain popularity)

So people search for the answer to their problem - and Squidoo tries to find the best "lens" from their vault that the community has written - if there is nothing coming up for your search then you will be asked to be thefirst to make a lens on the topic you searched for...smart...but not entirely flawless (if I was an expert on the subject why would I be searching for answers?)

Nevertheless - Squidoo is something you should have if you care about getting the word out about something, selling something, changing minds, sharing info, or if you just love to create, express yourself, and play.

What this means to you is that if you:

1. ...have a Web site and want more ways for people to discover it.

2. ...have a blog, and want to highlight your best posts, feature a commented version of your blogroll, or point to the products and services that you write about, read about and want to succeed.

3. ...are a yo-yo expert and want to point to infinite illusions on your online yo-yo store

4. ...are a nonprofit or charity and want to invite all your members to comment on a topic.

5. ...are a news hound, and wants to highlight important mainstream and non-mainstream stories for your readers.

6. ...are a podcaster, and wants to list the details of your podcasts, point to transcripts that some fan had posted, point to your six most recent podcasts, or include the RSS for subscribing to the podcast.

7. ...are a fan, and wants to share your personal views

8. ...are an author, and wants to invite comments from readers about the book or comment on other issues

9. ...are an entrepreneur, and wants to make some extra income through affiliate programmes.

10. ... are a person (and last time I checked - you are),who just wants to express their opinion.

You can take advantage of Squidoo to generate more traffic by creating a Lens or hundreds of lenses promoting whatever you want: so here's my thoughts on one fast way you can make money using Squidoo.

Step 1: Do Some Keyword Research And Find Yourself A Hot Niche - lets take "RV financing" as an example:

Step 2: Search On Squidoo And See If The Niche Has Been Discussed (rv financing hasn't been)

Step 3. Visit Clickbank.com or CJ.com and become an affiliate of a product on your chosen niche

Step 4.Create A Lens And Spend A Few Hours Making It A Fantastic Lens - (check out the Polar Bear Aware lens for an example)

Step 5. Include your Affiliate Link in your Lensand explain what the product is about (make people understand why the product is the next step towards understanding more or solving their problem)

Fast. Easy and the best part is its FREE.

Until next time fellow pilots, may your online marketing profits soar,

Adam Davis

BTW, although my sites suffered some from the Google Slap, all seems to be back to normal and better as far as my lenses go. For instance, Are You Polar Bear Aware is now a PR4 as is Cats Just Wanna Have fun and I have 2 PR3's: Life Cell: How To Lose The Wrinkles And Look Younger and How To Save Feral Cats...

These lenses have all been created in the last 2 to 4 months, except Are You Polar Bear Aware, which went live March 20, 2007. So Squidoo is definitely the way to go to get PR fast and redirect that traffic to your websites, sell products, inform the public, whatever you want to do.

Excellent information, Adam. I love Squidoo and have been pretty successful. In slightly less than 30 daysAre You Polar Bear Aware? (thanks for telling mentioning it) was named Squidoo Lens of the Day; ranked 36 out of 150,000+ lenses; became a PR3. It's continued to rank in the top 25 lenses with over 250,000 sites now. I 've also had 2 other lenses in the top 100.

I've just created a Squidoo lens on How To Squidoo... where I share my tips on what has made me so successful. Thanks again.

Squidoo allows you to become an expert on any topic you wish - its good because the ranking for squidoo is quite good however it has slipped lately.

If your Lens is good and provides quality information on a topic then you can soon find yourself with a lot of traffic to your website. - i'm currently working on a few and ill tell you how it goes!

I still dont completely understand squidoo.
It sounds a little like wikipedia... or build your own highly optimized seo page on a certain topic.
Also sounds a little like Mahalo.

Does squidoo send serious traffic?
