Link, Link & Link Again - Internal Links Matter Too

by JennyGray Prodigy(January 3rd) (rank 35th)

Look for SEO advice on the web, and almost every site you come across will harp on (quite rightly) about external and inbound links. I'm not ready to write about external links, and I wouldn't dare dismiss the importance of them, but I think there's a lot to be said for good internal links too.

The first thing has to be to link as much as you can - within reason. Never miss an opportunity for a keyword-rich link. Use the words and phrases in your content to link to other pages within your site. For example, the first paragraph on the paritor home page is:

Developers of teacher software, and music administration software for music and performing arts services and academies. Here are 2 of my key phrases, acting as links...

This is more effective than putting: 'click here for info on our teacher software', because 'Click here' doesn't say anything about the link itself, and is a missed opportunity for some keyword-linkage.

Deep Links & The Ronseal Principle

The content you're looking to return against your key search terms might not appear on your home page, so make sure you're linking to the right pages. This is an issue for me, as I'm promoting a number of different products. In the example above, the 'teacher software' link points to the pages for our teacher software (can you guess what the 'music administration software' link points to?). I hope I don't need to explain why I refer to this as The Ronseal Principle.

Deep links are almost more important to me than links to the paritor homepage, because they lead to product information. If you don't want deep links, then make sure you specify this in your robots.txt.

Many of my top 10 tips have to do with links and how to get the most out of them. I think that consistency is very important in all of this. I use my 8 key search phrases as much as I can, especially when I'm linking. See my post on Finding the right Search Phrases for more info.

Please leave a comment or email me if you want to discuss any of this.

Spot-on advice.  External links are important, but especially on heavy-content sites, a good internal linking structure says to a visitor, "Yeah, we know about that too."
