http://apps.facebook.com currently shows a PR of 8, essentially telling us all that google considers it to be a reliable source of info on the web. Recently, Facebook announced that they would make their application pages public, or at least, open up the option for developers to make their pages public. So this brings the SEO in me to ask, will these pages become highly ranked in the near future? Will they become a valuable place for sites to get links on? A storm of 'domain squatting', if you will, has already started on facebook, with developers gobbling up the most highly sought after keywords. A new application has even launched to allow developers to sell their facebook applications to those seeking to have the right keywords. My analysis is this: http://apps.facebook.com/apartments/ will be of no more value as a location for keyword specific content than say, http://apps.facebook.com/the-crazy-apartment-man/apartments/. Both locations in the facebook directory could potentially be developed with public accessibility, and both could be optimized with some "apartments" specific data. The only thing I can think of that would potentially limit this value of the second location, is that google may throw into their algorithm some value associated with how far down the directory a page is located. If location site.com/x/y/z/a/b/c is considered of less value than location site.com/x/ , then you may have an arguement in terms of assigning SEO value to the directory names behind facebook. Otherwise, I think the "squatting" may be short sited, and irrelevant. Any thoughts? Leave a comment! | |||||||

January 8th This was all in theory ... search for site:apps.facebook.com, and you see plenty of indexed listings. I was just using a popular keyword, like "apartments" to get the point across.

January 8th Also, search for the word "causes" on google.
Of all the pages that would show up, the causes application is the 2nd entry. This tells me that google is giving big time points to these public facebook directories. Reply

January 8th hmm interesting.
don't discount the 8,000+ links pointing to that page =-) also, to clarify your question the further down the tree you go the less weight you get. eg., www.example.com/lots_of_weight/less_weight/even_less_weight also am I understanding this correctly the only way to "squat" is to create a application like this? I heard a while back that they were going to make personal profile pages public like myspace does, but have yet to see any evidence. Reply

January 9th Yeah, to squat, you would just need to sign up as a developer, and then request a key for each application you pick.
In doing this, you can specify the actual facebook directory name that the application will use. So, essentially, just like with .com names, there is only room for 1 of each unique directory name. To actually add content to this, you would have to develop within the facebook API in order to put data on the page for that directory. Reply
