Buying Links : 5 Do's and Dont's

by BrianChappell Expert(October 2007) (rank 1st)

Link buying is one of the most heated facets of SEO lately. Google is trying to convey that they are cracking down on link buyers and sellers as of late. Time will tell whether this is just FUD, or if there is merit behind there publishing’s.

Before any site partakes in link buying it is wise to fully assess the needs of your industry. Is your site an ecommerce site competing with hundreds of other companies selling the same product? Is your site an informational resource providing inquisitive content for fellow web addicts? These are the kinds of questions you should ask yourself first and foremost.

NOTE: Not all situations require the need to partake in link buying.

DO NOT’s:

Purchase sitewide links
: These have been devalued for a while now. The days of aquiring many links from one site, and seeing exuberant boosts in ranking are long over. Sitewide links in many occasions are devalued. However, if you’re going for traffic and don't care about the potential link juice gained, then sitewides can actually serve of some purpose. Especially if your trying to protect your link profile.

Ring of Sites : Purchasing links from a vendor that claims to have a ring of sites that he can then quickly add your links to is asking for trouble. Steer away from this sort of thing.

Too many external links : A page with over ~100 plus external links is generally not a valuable page to be on, since the amount of pagerank and trust that is passed on to each site becomes greatly diminished. I like to find pages that have only a few external links. Those are the pages that will pass the most weight.

Infrequent crawl dates : Can be a potential sign that the page isn’t that important to the search engines thus it isn’t crawled frequently. A page that isn’t important might not do as much for you as a page that is crawled every day for example.

Paid Link stop words : Make it hard on a bot to find your purchased links by steering away from obtaining links with the words, advertisement, purchased, advert, partner, etc near or around them.

DO’s:

Links within content : The most natural linking occurs within content. These are the cream of the crop and cannot be easily indentified or devalued.

Interior Page : Interior pages are a much more natural location for links to be obtained. Homepage’s might have the most weight, but an on theme, relevant interior page in my book is much more valuable.

Frequently crawled page : Like I noted above a page that is crawled infrequently isn’t as valuable potentially as a page that is hit every single day by the bots. If the page is important, the bots are coming back for more and more.

Vary your anchor text : Keep your anchor text natural. No body’s link profile has the exact same phrase every single time. Variation is one of the keys to looking natural.

Long Term : If you’re looking for quick, instant gains from link buying in today’s game then get out now. You will be wasting your money. Link buying is a long term effort. The older a link is the more benefit you will gain from it.

There is no doubt that purchasing links to increase your search ranking is a complex task. It can be very expensive as well. Make sure you are fully versed on the mechanics of natural, organic rankings before you partake in this activity. Good luck.

You failed to mention a few very important points. Do not, ever buy links from dropped domains. Many people selling links on sites with hight PR, normally blogs, have PR because of the previous site that used that domain. After the first update you'll loose the PR.

Do not buy links from blog networks, This might sound tempting since prices can be as low as $30 for 100 posts but trust me you'll regret it in the long run.

The best option is t buy articles or reviews on blogs since the link will be in-content.

I really enjoyed reading your article. Very educational.
