Radiohead breaks the rules of traditional marketing

by BrianChappell Expert(October 2007) (rank 1st)

If you haven’t heard by now, Radiohead, the British quintet has released a new album, free of any record label. That’s right, they are unsigned, and creating their own path. They are even letting users pay for the download at whatever price they desire. I personally paid a whopping 5 bucks for my download. After listening to the album however I wish I paid more. It is magnificent.

The band is selling the entire album In Rainbows, for download, from their website. This is one the most brilliant forms of viral marketing a mainstream band could potentially come up with. In fact things appear to be going very well so far. The Chicago tribune is reporting that they have had upwards of 1.2 million downloads so far, in about 2 days time.

Cheers to you Radiohead, I hope other bands follow in your footsteps.

yes you are correct other bands/record companies will be stupid not to follow suit.  funny it took this many years for a band to realize the best way it to join the digital music revolution. everyone copies cds, mp3 and wmas - so just allow your audience to be honest with you. How much is a digital music track really worth anyway?

The funny thing is, they probably didnt do it for the viral marketing.  They did it because they disagree with the record lables restrictions.

I wonder how many of the most successful viral marketing campaigns are created by accident?

Without interviewing the guys in the band, I bet it was a smart business decision and they've been "business men" for years now. I'd give them a little credit and say they or those who "advise" them are aware of viral marketing. The music industry has been grassroots for years. Whether or not this post means anything, I had read this: http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20071022/011057.shtml

I'm giving credit where it's due.
