Twitter, for those who haven't seen it yet is the hottest of the new wave of microblogging tools, including the just acquired by Google Jaiku. The concept is simple enough: communication limited to 144 characters, the physical limit of SMS txt messages on a mobile phone. Messages go out to friends and followers, and in return you can see what they are Twittering about. I can't count the number of times I've seen people write about what a waste of time Twitter is, how it can't be monetized and that it's not worth using. At a first glance these are probably reasonable first conclusions, but Twitter actually offers a lot of things. Networking You can't put a tangible price on networking, so it's difficult to use networking as justification against the "you can't monetize Twitter" argument, but it is. Twitter is the ultimate always on networking tool that you can use to keep in contact with existing contacts as well as build new relationships. In my own case I've become friends with people who are in my Twitter stream, even to the point of sitting down to dinner at a function and immediately knowing people only from Twitter. Networking has indirect benefits as opposed to tangible direct benefits. It might be a future business deal, or asking someone for advice, but those relationships can and do often result in benefits to users. Marketing Tool Andy Beal wrote in his excellent post about owning your reputation online; Twitter is one part of owning your reputation and marketing yourself to the broader online community. Think of Twitter as a quick and cheap form of blogging, one that is easier to post to as it doesn't require a lot of thought as a blog post may well do. A good Twitter stream helps market yourself as someone with something to say and even as being an expert in your field. News Tool Twitter is also fast becoming an alternate source of breaking news. RSS readers do a great job, but if something is happening fast and you're following the right people you'll read about it more quickly on Twitter. As a news writer I've already found myself writing posts based on Tweets (Twitter posts) I've read. Fun My favorite side of Twitter is just the fun notion of connecting with people and discussing anything and everything. Sure, it can be a work distraction at times but all in all its one I've always welcomed. As I type this I've got the OSX Twitter client Twitteriffic open to the left of my browser on my first monitor. It sits there all day, every day, feeding me with news, gossips, discussions and even some fun bits and pieces. | |||||||

February 20th Nice Post. It works for me as well. Nothing like the short crisp feeling of an SMS rather than the traditionally long blogs & articles... who's got time!

February 11th Twitter's OK...but I think Jaiku has better features. But more people are on Twitter, so I just use Twitter...

January 21st After reading your posting and visiting Twitters website (something very vague in descriptive text as to what it is and why I should use it) it seems as though this is just another instant messenger program. Which in itself is nice to see something new try to compete in this category, but as far as it's usability daily, many messenger programs are blocked in corporate offices - you know, to keep from distracting staff away from their jobs.

November 2007 I can't agree more Duncan ... at my previous agency, I used Twitter to not only follow everything that was happening in Burma, but we were able to drive awareness to http://beta.razoo.com/causes/the_road_film_life_inside_burma just as well as we're able to from Facebook, Myspace and other online communities.
Also Twitter is kind of addicting and I can't seem to explain why. I also used it last week to look for developers as well. It may end up being a good way for developers to stay on top of what each other are working on. Reply

October 2007 Duncan - agree with you. I think twitter is a great way to spread your PR.
I use it to announce business related news relevant to our companies, plus I also add the occasional personal event. Here is my twitter feed for anyone interested Reply

October 2007 I am a bit of "twit" too - I love the ease of it and the sense of knowing what's going on. It certainly breaks down the barriers to communication - everyone becomes a bit human on twitter. I love the way they have been integrated into other platforms - facebook is very clever - I'd love to see it feed into Gooruze one day. It still seems to be a "downtime activity" for people - have you noticed how many posts are in an airport lounge? Reply

October 2007 Yeah -i've been playing with twitter off and on for a while - and the potential of it is pretty solid IMHO. I'm looking into incorporating some sort of "twit alert" into our promotional strategy here - so mainly what i'm looking at right now is anything that gives me a clues to demographics of users etc. but enough of that! - time for some shameless self pormotion!!!
www.gooruze.com/members/alex-s-/blog/105449/Foxy-Tunes-/ Of all the twitter-tools out there - this one so far is my fave! Of course it's going to appeal to the lies of me - a marketer, tech savvy and 110% music obsessed! ![]() Excuse the lack of posts on this account - i mainly set it up just to use foxytunes and test it's potential. hopefully sometime soon i'll feel happier moving my foxytunes into my main twitter account :) Reply
