March 13th I like this article. It's so easy to put your target market in one box, and forget about the different stages a potential customer might go through. Navigation is important for this too - someone who has already made the decision to buy could be irritated by having to sift through content pages to find the big red 'buy now' button. Perhaps I will revisit some of my pages with your article in mind...

March 5th Michelle,
great post. I would add that the crew over at Future Now www.futurenow.com have taken this whole concept a lot further and divided all three types into as many as 16 different personality types. They base this on the latest Myers Briggs system, and have spent the past 10 years developing it. What they reveal is that even if someone is a buyer or a shopper, they will have many different reasons and motivations for buying. Therefore to maximise the chance of a sale or conversion a site needs to cater for all the major "personas" at the relevant touch points in the purchasing process. It's great stuff and required reading for any serious copywriter and online business marketer or developer. Reply

February 24th Great article and a good reminder to try and not assume you've only got one kind of target audience
