Content is Not King - it is Supreme

by silk-merchant Prodigy(April 1st) (rank 37th)

I was discussing the real value of Web 2.0 apps with one of my programmers the other day, when he said don't worry too much about it, the coming Web 3.0 will change everything.

He gave me some links to follow, and several hours and some heavy reading later, I think I at least had a general understanding of Web 3.0, the dataweb, linked web, semantic web or whatever you want to call it.

The one thing I did get, was that if we all thought content was king before, it is going to be even more important in Web 3.0.

Some of you may have read recently Sir Tim Berners-Lee saying that Google could fall due to the challenges and opportunities the dataweb implies.

Anyway, I've written a rather lengthy post on my blog here, with links to all sorts of people, including Sir Tim, talking about the semantic web and what it means.

What I'd like to ask fellow Gooruze is where you're at with Web 3.0? What do you think of the next paradigm shift?

I went to a WA Business News breakfast this morning where Kerry Stokes spoke - Chairman Channel 7 etc.
Kerry reminded us all that only one thing is KING and that is the customer. And the only way to survive in business is to give the customer what they want (even if they don't know it).
So I guess I have to ask myself - what's the customer benefit of web3 - if I can answer that then I'm interested.

Thanks - clearly I need to do more research - it was raised recently by our technical team - but I hadn't appreciated the business case fully - I will now endeavor to better understand it and its implications. Can you suggest some examples of web 3 pioneers?

Jackie,

yeh my head still hurts from reading up on it. I'm still trying to fully get my head around it.

In the transcript of the Sir Tim Berners-Lee interview there are a host of links to what's going on and what could be going on.

As I understand it a lot of these services are still in beta, like Dapper and Yahoo Pipes. (all links on my blog)

I guess Yahoo is the one that's decided to really get moving on this, so keep an ear out for what they're up to.

Given Yahoo's recent corporate skirmishes, they probably needed to.

I was hoping some of the really smart technical people here on Gooruze could add to the discussion.
