Like an invasive species, spam continues to creep into social communities with the goal of destroying the trusted bond that exists between members. I participate in a number of vertical social networks that cater to public relations, social media and marketing professionals, including Gooruze, Sphinn, MyRagan and Brandweek’s At the Roundtable. I get value from the high-quality user-generated content produced by these communities, as well as establish professional connections that support Strategic Communications Group (Strategic) success. There is an assumed level of trust in messages exchanged between members in these communities, even when a personal connection has yet to be established. I’m afraid that’s now eroding. Several weeks ago the comments function on my blog on MyRagan.com began to be peppered with spam for offshore gambling operations. And just this morning I received this message in my Gooruze Email inbox: rejoice_dokie@yahoo.com
Are the creators and/or administrators of the social community responsible for weeding this out? Or do we as members of the community have to take ownership? This is a tough issue, yet one that needs to be addressed. Ultimately, the trust, credibility and viability of social networks depend on it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marc Hausman is president/CEO of Strategic Communications Group, a public relations consultancy based in Silver Spring, Maryland. July 3rd Timely post. I agree it is a joint responsibility. Thanks to all the members who reported the new member in question. The member has been removed by the membership and so hopefully a good example that the community can play a role. I think its worth the effort to ensure we can uphold the strength and value of communities like gooruze. I say that because within minutes of receiving the spam I received this email which should remind us all that this is worth protecting for existing members and all the online marketers who are yet to discover gooruze . "I'm very impressed with the site - articles are terrific and it feels like a safe and collaborative place to share insight, best practice and general experience. I came across the site in a very round-about way - such is the power of Web 2.0! I currently work as a marketer within a global market research company out of the UK, and our clients include some of the best known brands in the world - but we have recently seen an increase in demand for research related to online marketing, the influence of digital media, web 2.0 and beyond etc... and it was whilst reviewing our corporate news that a google news alert came in from a blog that referred to some of our research. From that blog I found a link to the top 200 Australian web 2.0 application sites, and from there Gooruze caught my interest. Interestingly for me - I read an article from a member that also pointed to some research we recently conducted - so I felt an immediate sense of belonging ;-) I'll be dipping in to the articles periodically, and will certainly share my thoughts and opinions where I feel they will add some value - but congratulations on a great site." Of course that congratulations is to you the members who have created and shaped gooruze and will ultimately determine its future.
