Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Basics 101

by ClayCook Exec(September 2007) (rank 14th)

If you are new to Search Engine Optimization then you will be interested in the following list.

Here are the basics (foundations) of SEO in my opinion. Make sure each web page in your website has these.
  1. Make sure each web page is primarily text and not just an image.
  2. Use the Title, Description, and Keywords meta tags.
  3. Use relevant keywords in your website text, Title and meta tags.
  4. Have other relevant websites link to your website.
  5. It is better to have keywords in your website address (URL) also. See the URL of this web page as an example.
These should be the basics for your websites SEO. Even if you go more advanced, you should still implement each of these points as they are the foundations of a successful website.

Good luck.

One thing new webmasters must also consider is keyword research. You need to choose the best keywords to target and base the rest of the website around them. Also ensure you have analytics in place from the beginning, because there is no use performing SEO if you don't know how it's going!

Nice basic overlay.

I'd add this keyword selector tool link to the conversation.

it's a very basic tool that provides decent keyword search data (albeit, a bit outdated - you'll find results from january 2007) and will give you the frequencies of a particular search term and of those keywords related to it.

and if anyone knows of a better tool (or if this one isn't being used much) please let me know!

I would also add that there are occasions where it's better not to use the Meta Description and Meta Keywords. Those need to be unique to each page. Many large e-commerce sites are incapable of producing unique Descriptions and Keywords tags. It's better not to use them at all than to have them be the same on every page.
