Optimizing a website for every major search engine – Is this exercise worth the efforts required to accomplish this herculean task? Accounting for all the things that differentiate one search engine from another, and incorporating all those factors to craft a version that is appropriate for all search engines may be next to impossible, unless you formulate different versions for each search engine. Google emphasizes on links, Yahoo is inclined towards keyword density, MSN prefers .......... and the list will go on for eternity. Overcompensating for a particular search engine would tip the scale and hurt your rankings in another search engine. A precarious situation faced by webmasters trying to optimize their websites.

As a website owner you put in a lot of hard work designing an attractive website and writing compelling content for the visitors. A lot of websites would fit into this description but getting search engine optimization spot on seems to be the tumbling block for many. The situation mentioned earlier does not make search engine optimization any easier.

A recent survey by 'Market Share' projected that Google's search engine market share is close to 79% globally. Its nearest competitor is Yahoo with a market share of 11.78%. Google's dominance is also evident in data available for individual countries (with a few exceptions), making Google the undisputed leader with little or no challenge from competitors. A slight fluctuation in Google rankings can thus make or break a business. Under the given circumstances, optimizing for Google seems to be the best bet and would help you reap the benefits of your concerted efforts.

Ranking in Google can sometimes be a mystery and keeping a few simple things in mind can help you accomplish the task effectively. The first and foremost is the careful selection of keywords, which should be naturally woven into the website content (beware of over using the keywords – keyword stuffing). Judicious use of tags (title and description) would help crawlers ascertain if a web page is relevant to a particular search term. Getting one way links from thematic websites and the proper use of anchor texts is another factor which would significantly impact your rankings on Google. Registering for free tools offered by Google would give you access to vital statistics of your website. Assimilating the gathered data and using this knowledge to make the necessary tweaks can boost rankings and give you more visitors. The only caution to be observed while implementing these activities is to not over do them as it would deliver a negative impact.

It is crucial to understand one important bit before embarking upon the journey for optimizing websites. Search engine optimization wasn't just about rankings a couple of years ago, and it definitely isn't all about rankings in today's world of blended search. It is imperative to segment and comprehend the source of traffic coming to a website. This piece of information would play a critical role in deciding the marketing objectives of your search engine promotion and thus enable you to select the appropriate channel. Search engine optimization is all about re-engineering a website to make it easily accessible to users as well as search engines. Accomplish this and your job is done.
