5 Ways To Promote Your Podcast

Can People Find Your Podcast?

Now this might sound like a silly question, but can people find your podcast? It’s true that people can get so caught up in making their podcast SEO friendly, but in actuality, unless they rank high on the search engines and on the social bookmarking sites, your audience will have an even harder time finding you because they’re not looking for you.

As a podcaster, you’ll need to take additional steps to ensure that you are found by your audience. You can’t just make a podcast and post it to a feed and just sit back and wait. That would be like a blogger who just writes and does nothing to promote their blog. Here are some ideas to help people find your blog.

  1. Your podcast must be SEO friendly. You might be wondering just how you can make an audio file SEO compliant. Most importantly, put relevant keywords in the title of the podcast episode. Also, make sure your title tags on your podcast site use the episode title in the title tag of the individual page it is hosted on. Another important point is to tag your podcast with relevant keywords. You should also include a short description of what the podcast is about and again, using keywords. Some podcasters even transcribe their podcast into written format to aid with SEO friendliness.
  2. Use social bookmarking tags to help people find your podcast. Much like tagging for SEO purposes, tagging for social bookmarks are specific to the social search engine you’re on (i.e. – Digg, del.icio.us, ma.gnolia.com, sphinn, com etc.) While this is not related specifically to tagging, you’ll find that social networks are great places to promote your podcast. Places like MySpace and Facebook have the potential to make your podcast go viral.
  3. Get on someone else’s podcast or blog. Spend some time browsing other people’s sites and commenting. You could incorporate a link back to your site in your comment. Additionally, you can negotiate a deal with complementary podcasts to exchange promo spots for each other’s show.
  4. Use a press release to promote your podcast. If you have a notable episode, write a press release and submit it to places like I-Newswire and PR Newswire. Many people visit PR sites and depending upon who they are, they might even do a write up if you have a really unique topic.
  5. List your podcast in non-podcast directories. You don’t only want to list your podcast in podcasting directories since many people still don’t really search podcast directories unless they want to specifically load something onto their mp3 device. List your podcast on RSS feeds and blog directories as well.

Helping people find your podcast will ensure that your audience is continually growing. Review these areas to see where the opportunities are and see the success you’ve always wanted to see with your podcast.
