Pros and Cons of Mobilecasting

by ggallucci Expert(October 2007) (rank 11th)

More people own cell phones than have land lines today. I am canceling our family's land line this month. The cell phone is rapidly becoming the primary form of telecommunication in the phone industry. Additionally, cell phones are becoming the preferred way people access email and photos. It is estimated that as technology improves, more people will begin to use their cell phones as a means to access the internet and email even overtaking desktop usage. That time is not too far in the future, and mobile casting is definitely making an impact!

What is mobile casting? More accurately, the term is called mobilecast or mobilcast. This is a podcast file that can be transmitted to a user via cell phone. The added convenience of portability is quickly gaining popularity as more and more people begin to use their cell phones as portable audio players. These portable podcasts are downloaded from a PC to a portable device or it can be transmitted over-the-air.

Despite this advance in technology, there are a few kinks to work out in the system. Many phone networks and older model phones are not able to handle file transfers. The complaint is that the download takes a long time with these large files. Additionally, there are file storage space issues with older phones. This still has not stopped people from using these opportunities. Podcasters have created smaller files (or have reformatted files into more mobile-friendly formats) that give quick information like movie listings and news headlines.

If you’re an avid podcaster, you might be wondering if this is even worth trying. Everything is within reason is worth trying. The reality is that technology will improve. We’re already seeing improvements in cell phone devices becoming more web-friendly. Phones like Apple’s iPhone is a technological leader in this industry. Even with the issues that this phone might be having, you can surely bet that Apple and related companies are well on developing the next level of advanced technology. It’s just a matter of time before the web begins to have a real working presence with cell phones. When that happens, people will be accessing their email and the web via their phone just for the simple fact that it’ll be more convenient. If you’re still concerned about whether it’s worth trying, consider this. At the very least, you’ll gain experience in using technology like this and you’ll be ahead of the game.
