As online networkers go, I definitely fall into the Ho/Sl*t category. I will get LinkedIn / Facebook Friend / Twitter Follow with just about anybody who doesn’t spam me. I deliberately choose this path because I believe that expanding my “sphere of influence” online is worth the time spent at these activities. Last week, I received the following email via LinkedIn from a total stranger. Hi, I’m a recent graduate and former student-athlete looking for career opportunities in the Portland Metro Area. Please let me know if you have any information or contacts. Thanks, <…name withheld because you’re probably a nice guy and I don’t want you being naive to hurt your ORM…> OK…what’s wrong here?

December 2008 Ultimately, what it boils down to is that your online relationships need to have some element of sincerity and authenticity, or at the very least a mature "give and take" aspect. Oh wait - that's just like "real" relationships! Just "using your connections" to get what you want is always going to be a short-term strategy (hmm, maybe that's why so many marriages fail?) and it's why we resent spam so much - it's just someone "using their connection" (your harvested email address) to get what they want. They might even succeed once, but they create no value for the other party and such relationships have no future... So when creating those online connections I think at the very least we need to be providing value for the other party - to quote the letter of James again, "If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, 'Love your neighbor as yourself,' you are doing right."... November 2008 Nice job taking the high road and not outting the person, who likely didn't understand. Now if it was a total troll, I would help you advertise the name, but that's apparently not the case. Love the tags on the piece. Speaking of ORM, so maybe we not let that one get spidered...
