16 Oct Moving from an SEM Agency to an in-house position was an interesting and sometimes trying transition. I spent 7 years working with others who shared my knowledge of the online marketing world. When I moved on to an in-house position with in an industry that is just beginning to embrace the Internet I became aware of how little the general public knows about SEO, SEM, and online marketing. Even using terms like SEO lead to blank stares and glassy eyes. I learned that I not only had to report my what I was doing to my superiors and co-workers but I also had to teach them what the terms I was using meant. Some get it and some are still a little lost whenever I talk. I want to develop this group to help other in-house SEM's become better at what they do but also offer a support group for those of us who need to talk to a few like minded folks from time to time. If you are an in-house SEM or would like to learn more about it please join the group and offer your experiences and advice.

February 7th Sounds like a good challenge, but keep some of the magic to yourself. PPC can appear to be simple and easy to some business owners - a bit like editing - so one day they might think they can do it themselves.
As for terminology, please help to reinstate the original meaning of SEM, which includes SEO, PPC, blogs and all other forms of marketing that uses search engines. Google and Yahoo started this trend and the agencies have followed. Reply

November 2007 With everything I've been reading about in-house vs. outsource and all the defending of in-house I've been doing, it's good to see this group. Thanks!

November 2007 I've been in-house since 2003 at two different companies. I do enjoy it, but understand the frustration. Glad to see this group, and hope I can give as much as I get from it.

October 2007 I feel your pain. People in my company really have NO IDEA what SEO is....and yet, i have a seven figure paid search budget. It amazes me how many of the upper management have no idea what a paid search result is...and they just think that paid search is "google ad words".

October 2007 Great to hear from other "similar-minded" people. It will definately help all of us to be have someone who understands our ups & downs without having to explain what CPC or CPM or ROI etc means :) Very exciting Reply

October 2007 Wow it looks like you have a challenge on your hands. I hope maybe some in-house basic training and the value in real dollars of understanding the space. I think some companies offer a profit share of what is made from online advertising to motivate teams members to learn quickly and attend training sessions with much vigor and excitement this industry brings.
Good luck and I hope this becomes a good resource for learning about the industry :0) Reply

October 2007 It is definitely a challenge but it is also exciting. I have enjoyed being a bit of a teacher to my fellow employees. Many of the others who work here are totally new to computers let alone the Internet and search marketing so it can be difficult to explain what I am doing. I have been lucky in a sense because my immediate superior has a pretty solid although basic understanding of search marketing and the executives trust my expertise enough to let me do my thing. Sometimes I have to explain things to them but they generally understand I know what I am doing and they let me do it.
