09 Oct Member rank improves from a number of factors including: 1. writing articles that are well ranked by other Gooruze members, or 2. commenting on articles, or 3. answering questions, or 4. commenting on blogs, or 5. commenting in forums or groups (and getting ranked positively for the comments and answers you have given), or 6. writing blog posts, your own Gooruze blog, groups, forums. In all these cases the higher ranked the member who is voting on your content; the more “points” you get towards your own membership ranking. We can detect anyone trying to game the system (i.e. creating multiple accounts etc), which is a breach of Conduct. If you click on “members” in the top bar you will see the highest ranked members ad be able to see how many comments, articles and votes they have made…. Regular visits to Gooruze also help your ranking as your membership points degrade over time when you are away for an extended period (your rank is restored to 100% when you return to the site at anytime)

October 2007 I just wrote a blog post here on Gooruze about one potential aspect of the ranking algorithm, and would welcome any thoughts:

October 2007 What the heck?? Andy Beal told me it costs $100 a week to get into the top 15. I started paying him 3 weeks ago. I should have known something was wrong when he said cash only and gave me a PO Box to send it to!!! Hahhaha Gooruze has the same algorithm as Google. Write for the users not the engine. You will get ranked naturally!! Reply

October 2007 i just hope that people put up QUALITY articles, responses, etc....and not just to try to get ranked higher. I already know who is a good poster now and make sure to click their responses.

October 2007 How come new members (within the last 24 hours) who have no activity are getting ranked higher than me?

October 2007 I'm experiencing that new members with no activity rank higher than me as well...and my rank fell quite a bit overnight. Just wondering why?

October 2007 Hi Vanessa,
Thanks for calling this out. We are continuing to tweak the algorithm. It will better reflect people's contribution soon. Kindest Clay Reply

October 2007 So I have become an addict of this place. Now I don't know if you have a way of tracking that and thus decreasing my rank so I will spend more time here trying to make valuable contributions but it's working.
I don't do social networking sites. This one is great because its relevant to me and no one is trying to get me to look at naked pictures of them for $24.99 a month. Besides Vanessa Fox. So please help a guy out and quit making my rank go down. I promise I will stop "repurposing" wikipedia article I find in other places. Reply

October 2007 Jenn,
I have just had a quick look and I think there may be a bug in the algorithm somewhere. It seems to me as though you should definitely be much higher than new members that have not contributed :s I have emailed the team, and they will look into it. Thanks Clay Reply

October 2007 not all member activity and gooruze ranking factors are displayed on the member page. If we give away too much info - some members will find it to much of a temptation to try and game the ranking algo (some are trying already). If you're adding in quality information and getting involved in the discussions on a regular basis - you're movement up the rankings will come.

October 2007 Good to know. I just hope that people post quality stuff...and not just try to get ranked higher.

October 2007 quality stuff is key
people can post quantity and climb fairly high, but if the quality is no good then their rank will suffer. The higher your shield rank... the more your weight your vote counts. Currently the founding gooruze have very strong votes.. when they vote on something, then the ave vote for the content will shift close to the vote they cast. Hope this makes sense. Reply

October 2007 total sense.
And great that votes by higher ranked people carries more weight. Reply

October 2007 I've noticed that. If something has one vote of 4 stars and I vote it at 3 stars, the average drops to about 3.1 or 3.2, not the 3.5 you would expect. Nice. :-)
Maybe that's why I'm getting friend requests from strangers! Reply

October 2007 How frequently is this being calculated?
As an example I have left a few comments, voted on stories and submitted a news item that has been voted upon but as yet no change in ranking. Is there some time delay? Reply
