Gooruze - Feature wishlist - Group
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!

I think that the Groups Area needs a few simple tweaks, and thre may be some features that could be programmed in to enhance it.

1) You tend to want to meet other Members, then Join, then Blog. So that order seems logical, so perhaps that shoudl be the order for the options?

2) The Member photos or list should be interactive, and perhaps it would be useful to see who among my friends is a member, then to see a sortable list of members, with data on who contributes / comments, when last visited / commented.

3) The logo is redundant, unless customised for the group, as is the 'home' menu item - the 'Groups' heading item can serve the 'home' role when viewing a specific group.

4) Group Descirption and pic of the administrator should be placed into a container to keep information that belongs together - together.

What do you think folks - what have I missed - where am I wrong?

Regards, David

Thanks for the feedback David - all suggestions are welcomed. To address your points:

  1. adding the options from the side navigation to the "blog bar" could be a good way to make engagement easier for users.
  2. when you say member images should be "interactive" - do you mean in the sameway as the member images at the top of the homepage? I can see that some sorting options on the member page of groups could be handy. Not sure there would adequate space to do this on the group main page.
  3. The group image is picked by the creator, and can be customized to match the group. see the tactical SEO group as an example. As for the "home" option, it actually takes the user back to the main page of the group they are viewing. The "groups" option takes them back to the overall groups category, so they serve to separate purposes. Perhaps the "link text" doesn't make this clear.
  4. I agree that containing the group description with group "vitals" (e.g. administrator, member numbers, start date etc) would make sense, and provide greater prominence for the description towards the top. Not sure adding the group administrator image adds much value. The link to their profile is purely so members know who to contact should they have any questions or suggestions for the group.

Potential Additions:

  1. It appears, based on your feedback, that viewing the groups members is quite important to you. Potentially a "view all members" link near the feature member images at the top, would provide more intuitive access to the list.

While i think your ideas are valuable, I'm not sure they will really address the issue of "inactivity" that you raised in your "Quiet in here, isn't it?" post. I'd love to hear other UI suggestions from members to improve activity (assuming people agree its the UI that presenting a hurdle).

Again, thanks for the suggestions David. The relevant ones will be added into the enhancement mix for consideration in our next phase of development.
