18 Oct Ok so it appears Gypsy is seeing the same thing I am. I will admit hes the first person that has admitted seeing the same falling of link power that I have noticed over the past several months. "What seems painfully obvious these days is that the ever popular methodologies based upon link relationships (backlinks) or simple keyword density centric approaches in your SEO programs just aren’t everything they once were." (if you dont mind me quoting you) Something is def. up. The old days of moving right up the ladder, via backlinks are slowly passing. The ladder seems to be slippery then ever. Anyone else noticing this trend as of late, with Google especially.

January 15th Brian, I'm actually seeing an opposite trend. I'm finding that more quality links out instead a focus on only links in are pushing sites up in the SERPs. I wasn't sure before, but I've seen enough sites now repeat the same climb up the SERPs from simply doing massive linking out to other authority websites within the same website's genre.

January 15th I have been doing that with my site for a while. It just seemed kind of obvious as a point of interest for google to weigh. The tricky part is doing this effectively for an ecommerce site, but at the same time, not losing sales.

October 2007 To be honest, I believe there has been a move away from backlink centric scoring systems since 2004 or so... it's seems to have picked up more speed since 2006 IMO. If you've even spent any time around the Black Hat community, you'd know the importance of 'link spamming' in that game. While it has been the best way to rocket up the ranks it is also a great set-up for folks like Google in that they know where to look for the bad guys (link spam-link profiles)..... so additional ranking mechanisms could make it harder to rank crap, but it can also make it harder to catch.... an interesting problem. Ultimately, relevance in the form of 'probabilistic' methods is more a function of refining query results than it is about controlling web spam..... Valuation of links is obviously another issue, from using relevance factors such as Phrase Based Indexing and Retrieval down to re-evaluating certain areas such as directories or forums (which was mentioned in this Patent ) there are many reasons wonder. One thing I AM SURE OF is that backlinks are being treated differently... if it is the indexation/aggregation or merely the weighting that is being wiggled.... this ain't 2004 any more..... Dave (why does all the text bunch up when I post?? grrrrrrr)
