The first fifteen minutes were filled with soundbites from Zuckerberg about the social graph, how cool and popular Facebook is, the history of advertising and how revolutionary this announcement is. Just moments ago, Zuckerberg began on the actual announcement:

November 2007 Once again, facebook steps in between its developers and its own platform.
Why make a platform for developers, if you are just going to continue to take the best ideas for real content oriented applications and build them/control them yourself. For instance, there are a few good restaurant ratings apps already out there. So what does facebook do... they go out and build their own, and call it a new tool for developers to use to enhance the community.... Im not buying it. Reply
