This will be my 4th year for Pubcon Vegas and my 6th Pubcon overall - I am sure that this will be another stellar time.

On a sad note I will be without some friends this time around.  Ever since Pubcon New Orleans back in 2005 I have had a great group of guys to hang out with - but it seems this year most of the group wont be making it. Id like to give a shout out to those in Australia, Seattle, Phoenix, Chicago, and San Francisco that won’t be making it.

On Thursday night I was jumping from Best Buy to Circuit City to Staples and other sites left and right. What was I doing? I was checking out the deals that I may take advantage of the following morning. I then recalled reading about a black friday site and how great and easy it made sorting all of the deals. I proceeded to search for the name “bfads” as that was all I could recall.

I did my search for “bfads” in hopes of finding bfads and up came Bfads.com. I, like most people went to Bfads.com only to find a very 1998 looking site. Upon the page loading I then saw the disclaimer on the site:

So today as always I was following news from SEL, SERoundtable, and the various chatter that goes on within Twitter when I watched something interesting. There are often many interesting conversations that take place ranging from personal, to rants, arguments, theories, what people ate, where people are shopping and so on. This was one of the first times I have seen someone suggest something and get action taken by a web site or company.

The past week or so there have been some snags with the once steady TinyURL and URLtea. The two services have started to take on heavy loads with services like Twitter using the APIs and creating a ginormous amount of links.

Below are some alternatives to TinyURL and URLtea:

In the world of SEO there is the constant argument of if Links or Content is King? After some recent purchases by Discovery and CNET I have to say that in terms of money - Content is King.

A month ago Discovery bought How Stuff Works for $250 million.  Well Im still not sure what part of How Stuff Works/How Stuff Works International/Convex Group actually was sold, it doesnt really matter.  Discovery bought a site with an estimated 3.8 million unique users a month and a few thousand articles. HowStuffWorks.com also has the content from Consumerguide.com (I use to work there) and the thousands of reviews that came along with it.

Well I am still in the office and with a friend out of town and the girlfriend I would be heading down to Tech Cocktail on my own - so Im going home to rest up for the weekend.

For those in the Chicago area you really should check it out next time around. In July I met some of the guys from Threadless, a Ruby on Rails/Ajax developer, and a few other interesting people. I must admit that I did spend most of the night hanging out with former coworkers, the girlfriend and Sugarrae (who was in town for another reason).

Unless you are living under a rock you know that the Writers Guild of America (WGA) is currently on strike. This is putting the kabosh on TV shows and movies but I feel it is a good thing. You can read elsewhere about the sides (Studios vs Writers) and even follow some of the happenings on Twitter.

It is 1AM and I was just digging through some email, blogs, newsletters(I get way to many a day), and some random sites (Carlos Mencia vs Joe Rogan mostly). During my digging I saw a post by Danny over at SEL and it made me think of my Pre SES Chicago 2007 post and how or who is going to Pubcon and who is going to SES Chicago.

As December draws closer for the 2 conferences the scramble to get butts in seats for Pubcon and SES. will get stronger. However the I dont think the conferences are really competing. I have never thought of them as close in content or even just the spirit of them really. They both target different people and except in some rare cases really dont compete for the same audience.

Just about every year I attend a Toys for Tots party put on by some friends and thought I would plug it here. For those in the Chicago area take a read and if you can come down and join us.

Hello Friends!

Big Kids for Little Kids will be hosting the 11th annual Toys For Tots charity event on December 1, 2007. This event’s mission, in conjunction with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program, is to collect new, unwrapped toys during each year and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. Or is it?

Why does everything online have to be about the numbers. I have X number of subscribers, I have X number of visitors, I have X number of page views. Bloglines came out with a Top 1000 Blogs today as proof that its all about the numbers. Then the newer service Quantcast is a ComScore/Hitwise type service only free that is too all about the numbers.

As I verify my blog on a site I might as well do a quick review of it. Oh and here is your code Mr Gooruze: daver.gooruze.com

Gooruze.com is a Digg for Marketers with some good content and community going on. I havent spent much time on the site as I have been busy in and out of work but plan to dig deeper into it.

I am adding my blog right now and can be found here http://www.gooruze.com/members/daver/ if you are interested. If on the site add me as a friend - otherwise look for a real review when I have a better understanding of the site.

I dont follow the NBA like I have in the past - maybe due to the fact that my Bulls arent the yearly favorite. Im not saying the “Baby Bulls” arent good but I only have so much time and I love my NFL and College Football.

Back to the topic at hand - the Sonics are moving?

In today’s online world I wonder how some businesses can operate with no web presence or with poor excuses for one.

Take the Aragon Ballroom for example - its domain is http://www.aragon.com/ but if you look closely its really hosted somewhere else.

Why?

I just saw that Omniture bought Visual Sciences on Oct 25, 2007 for just under $400 million.

Visual Sciences was formerly known as Web Side Story.

Just saw an email from SearchEngineWatch that had a post by Greg Jarboe and must say it was quite good.

Its 20,000 Reasons to Attend SES Chicago and that 20,000 is in $20,000 reasons. He does a good job of setting it up so that people can “sell” their boss on sending them to the conference. There is one fault with his “sell” however.

Just saw the news that a ever growing list of social sites of various types are joining Google and its OpenSocial idea. As of now the list includes Bebo, Engage.com, Friendster, hi5, Hyves, imeem, LinkedIn, Ning, Oracle, orkut, Plaxo, Salesforce.com, Six Apart, Tianji, Viadeo, and XING. I am interested to see how companies will leverage this and [...]
