30 Oct This post is from from my other blog here Since you can’t get enough of my byline, here are two articles I’ve written that are now available on other sites:
The Gooruze article is #2 in an SEO Basics series I’m writing which has been well received. The DM News article was interesting: The topic/headline was given to me, and I was asked to write … I think it was 500 words max. Might’ve been 600 words. Anyway, my first draft came in at TWICE the limit, so I ended up spending more time editing ...

28 Oct This post is from from my other blog here Answer: By turning their web site into a playground for shoppers like you and me. Summary: Amazon has just launched Video Product Reviews, and its Amapedia wiki site is growing. The SEO impacts are obvious, as are the lessons for other retailers, big and small. (read on for full story…) Introducing Video Product ReviewsThe User-Generated Content train continues to roll along, and I’m convinced Amazon.com is the conductor. No online retailer has opened up its platform to UGC like Amazon has, and now shoppers have yet another way to add product content to the site: Video Product Reviews. Here’s a screenshot of what I ...

25 Oct This post is from from my other blog here Within the last couple months, Yahoo Answers changed how moderation is done on the site. I wrote about the new emphasis on “trusted reporters” and the promise to reply to spam reports more quickly. That was a month or so ago, and since then I’ve been using the site and reporting crap when I see it. Like today, when I found some spam and decided to see how the new system is working. Here’s the question I found:
I took that screenshot when I reported it as spam, which was at 4:00 pm PT (the start of my daily reading hour). I ...

23 Oct Yes, Virginia, you can keep track of your Gooruze activity quite easily. Gooruze has a feature that is currently buried in the left-hand navigation called your Watchlist, and it tracks articles, blog posts, group activity, etc., that you've participated in. 1. Go to your profile page. 2. Look in the left-hand navigation menu. 3. Click WATCHLIST. If you can't find it, the URL should be this: http://www.gooruze.com/members/YOURMEMBERNAME/watchlist/ While you enjoy this page, we'll see what we can do about making a link to it much more prominent.

22 Oct With almost every social network you join, this question comes up: Should I accept friend requests from people I don't know? On LinkedIn, I usually accept those requests. On Facebook, I don't -- because I have much more personal info. in my Facebook profile than I do just about anywhere else. I have two friend requests here on Gooruze right now from people that I don't think I know. I don't have any personal info. here, so that doesn't really concern me. I wonder if the member ranking system is influenced in any way by the quantity and quality of your Gooruze friends. Hmmmmmmm.........

One, social media marketing is fun, right? Think about it — On-page optimization? Necessary, but pretty boring. Link building? Like pulling teeth. Crawling/technical issues? Gotta do it, but not my cup of tea. But jumping into the social media pool, i.e., making great content and seeing what it takes to have it go viral? Love it. Two, it was a “who’s who” of search marketing. With a couple exceptions, everyone you would expect to ...

Answer: Prior to today, absolutely nothing. But starting today, we are all — along with a handful of other super-smart online marketers who put me and my talents to shame — founders of a new online “advice-opedia” called Gooruze, pronounced as you might expect: like “gurus.” Gooruze runs on a platform called vibEngine, which also powers the very popular parenting site, Minti.com, a 2nd-place winner in the most recent SEOmoz Web 2.0 Awards. What is Gooruze?Gooruze, ...

How about it, gang? Pretty please, with lots more reading and link potential on top?
12 Oct This post is from from my other blog here It’s an ongoing question for small business owners selling online: Should we use Google Checkout? PayPal? Both? Before I go any further: I don’t have the answer to that question, and you may have noticed I made no mention of Google Checkout in my recent SEL articles about which Google products a small business should use. (Missed those? Here’s part one and part two.) If a client asked for advice, I’d suggest research and testing to find out which is best for your situation. If I were an online retailer, I wouldn’t like the fact that using Google Checkout means I ...

Which Google Products Should A Small Business Use? (Part Two) If you missed part one, there’s a link in the intro. I also have a 3rd article in this series that I planned to post here on SBS, but the article has gone missing. Or, my dog ate it. I’ll try to piece it back together, maybe on the flight to New York Monday if I can’t get to it sooner. Sigh. Anyway, it’s 9:00 am and I need to get to work…..
11 Oct This post is from from my other blog here Small Business Brief, which has been home to the latest small business marketing news since early 2004, re-launched Wednesday with a new look and format. The new look incorporates the familiar puppy logo that’s been in use for a couple years. The new format is one that’s very much in vogue right now, and one that I assume many readers are familiar with: story submission and voting, the format Digg made popular. It’s a pretty dramatic change for a site that has been low-tech in its design, and has generally used the Small Business Ideas forum as its main community hub. Here’s ...

07 Oct This post is from from my other blog here Here’s a quick and free SEO tip: If you’re looking for some buzz right now, go green. Here’s why: In the last couple weeks, I’ve come upon two small businesses (neither are clients) that are getting some combination of media attention, online buzz, inbound links, and natural search traffic simply because they’ve created products or emphasized products that represent environmental-friendliness.
As the graph above from Google Trends shows, searcher interest related to the phrase “go green” is clearly on the rise. So that’s Step #1 — you’ve got an interested audience. Even more revealing is the bottom half of the chart, which ...

04 Oct This post is from from my other blog here Tim makes an excellent point on his Convert Offline blog with this post: Nobody Wants To Admit The Problem With Local Is The Lack Of SEO. Tim is talking about the “confusion” and “challenges” involved in solving local search, and his point is that content isn’t the problem, it’s SEO: “There is plenty of content in the local space you just can’t find it … why? There is so little SEO in Local.” I agree with Tim on that count, but only up to a certain point. The other problem with local is … well, location. It really can’t be understated: The ...
03 Oct This post is from from my other blog here An open letter to small business owners Dear Small Business Owners, On behalf of search marketers everywhere, I urge you: Put down your rankings reports. They’re not providing you nearly the value you think they are. Rather than focusing on how Google and Yahoo rank your site, focus on how your human visitors rank your site. Do they:
