SEMMYS logoThis is just a quick note that I’ll be closing down the voting booths just about 24 hours from now for the 2008 SEMMY Awards. Voting will end around end-of-day Pacific time tomorrow (Wednesday, January 30).

As a reminder, you can pick and choose the categories you want to vote in — so if you’re not too familiar with the finalists in a certain category and don’t have time to read them, skip it. Each category has its own voting booth/survey, so go vote in the ones you want!

START VOTING NOW!

“Whisper” by Brian Scott“SEO is like traditional marketing.”

That’s the opening sentence of a “secret” I share in an article published tonight on the Small Business Trends web site. It’s always difficult to come up with a secret. One person’s secret is another person’s old news. SBT Editor Anita Campbell told me the target readership is small business owners who “are not SEO professionals.” With that in mind, I stayed away from anything uber-technical about SEO, and tried to present SEO advice in terms that might be more familiar.

What’s crazy about the article is that I’m giving ...

SEMMYS logoThe judges have done a lot of reading, they’ve deliberated and debated, and they’ve decided on the finalists for the 2008 SEMMY Awards. Me? I’ve setup the voting booths and tested things, and it all seems to be ready. So…

Starting at 12:00 pm ET (9:00 am PT) today, the finalists in all 15 categories will be revealed on the SEMMYS web site. And because I’m a sucker for drama, the finalists will be revealed one category at a time every five minutes. It’ll begin promptly at 12pm/9am with the Rants category, then progress until the SEO category finalists are revealed ...

CNN logoImagine the attention, traffic, and who-knows-what-else you’d get if your small business was featured on CNN. Sounds like a pipe dream, but it’s not.

CNN Headline News is starting a new segment called “Small Business Success”, and they want to hear your tips and advice for succeeding as a small business.

Is there anything specific you’ve done to improve the way your business runs? What advice would you give to someone who is just starting a company of his or her own? We want your tips on striking out, and making it, on your own. Share your wisdom in writing, or ...

If your small business is service-oriented, expertise is your product. It’s your value proposition and what sets you apart from your competitors. The better you market your expertise, the better you’ll grow your business.

How To Position Yourself as an Expert

The SEO/SEM industry provides great examples of selling a service-based business. Here’s a quick list:

1.) Blogging. Starting a blog and developing it into a trusted resource is great way to position yourself as an expert.

2.) Writing articles. Likewise, writing articles and giving them to already established sites in your niche will help create authority.

3.) Ebooks. Ask Aaron Wall if his ...

I’ve had a few conversations this week about the limitations of the SEMMY awards. I’m well aware of some of the great articles, authors, and sites that are under-represented. And I’m thankful that those people have accepted my omissions with grace.

Those conversations have led me to do a lot of thinking this week about visibility, and how to increase it. Isn’t that what all marketing is about? Sure, you ultimately want sales, or leads, or whatever; but it all begins with visibility. And most companies turn to search marketing because they have a visibility problem.

The Visibility Problem

Here are a six ways to ...

If you’re a company that’s desperate to get small business signups, and you don’t really have good marketing judgment, you’ll use Google AdWords to position yourself as a middleman offering a “free” link “for SEO credit”.

Merchant Circle PPC ad

(Never mind the likelihood that most of your business listing pages have no PageRank to speak of. Heck, not even the top business promoted on your Member Showcase page has any PR on its business listing page.)

On the other hand, if you’re a company that’s been in trouble because Google considers you a middleman that offers links for SEO credit, you’ll wisely change your tune ...

How many blog posts and articles do you think the SEM industry produces in a given week? Hundreds? What about a month? A full year? Whatever the answers are, the numbers must be pretty staggering. How on earth do you even try to hand out awards for great content when there’s so much content to track?

SEMMYS logoIt’s an impossible task, but I’m sticking my neck out and — with the help of more than two dozen friends and fellow search marketers — giving it a try. Introducing The SEMMYS.

The SEMMYS are annual awards that will honor the best Search Engine Marketing ...

pyramid logoJohn Wooden, the greatest basketball coach ever, never talked to his teams about winning. He talked to them about preparation and about the process of becoming a great team.

Wooden’s philosophy on coaching (and life) is summed up in the “Pyramid of Success,” which beats the tail off all that Self-Help Guru junk you see peddled in books, on blogs, on daytime chat shows, and on late night TV. I was lucky to hear Coach Wooden speak about the Pyramid of Success while I was a student at Pepperdine University; to this day, it’s one of the best speeches I’ve ...

It’s not everyday you win an award that your industry peers voted on, and it’s even rarer that you win two such awards in the same day! And it’s even rarer, still, that you get asked to judge another competition at the same time. But all that happened to me today, and it’s a real treat/honor.

SBS Awards

Even though I suggested people vote otherwise, readers of Search Engine Journal voted Small Business SEM the Best Local Search Blog of 2007. Incredibly honored by this, especially since I feel there are more deserving writers. Thanks to all who voted.

As if that’s not a ...

My apologies if you’re reading this with the expectation that I have a bunch of tips about book marketing. Actually, I’m looking for tips on how to market a book. :)

U2 books

Late last night I finished writing U2 - A Diary and sent it off to the editor at Omnibus Press. The publisher has done and will do a small amount of book promotion, but I want to do more. With my U2 site, I have a large, built-in audience. I also have friends around the world who have their own U2 sites. Reaching the dedicated, online U2 fan shouldn’t ...
