There’s a lot of buzz here at SMX West about the new “Open Search” idea that Yahoo introduced yesterday. The reaction is generally very positive, and the official announcement on Yahoo’s search blog has also generated a lot of discussion and, no doubt, a lot of traffic.

That announcement uses a restaurant listing from Yelp.com as its example, and as soon as I saw it, I thought Man, that’s some nice exposure for Yelp, isn’t it?. Here’s the image they used:

Yelp on Yahoo

People/webmasters everywhere read the Yahoo search blog, right? And that listing looks nice — it shows off the great content Yelp ...

I suppose this was inevitable: Flickr has finally put the no-follow tag on some of the outbound links that users can place on the photo-sharing service.

Here’s a look at the most recent photo on my personal photo stream, which includes a link to my personal blog, where I wrote about the photo in more detail:

Flickr no-followed link

The pink highlight = a nofollowed link. That link is in the photo description that I wrote about my own photo, so now there’s no linking benefit to sharing photos on Flickr. Links that other users place in the comments on a photo are also ...

Local search industry watchers have been saying for a while now that local search is primarily a search online, buy offline model. We look online for the right product, and then go buy it at a local store. I believe that to be a mostly accurate statement, although there are obvious exceptions. (I don’t go offline to make hotel reservations, for example, yet that is very much local search.)

Search Online, Buy Offline?

Anyway … if “search online, buy offline” is the dominant function of local search, you would think that retailers would be going out of their way to make that process easier. Circuit ...

Small is BeautifulI was quite happy a few weeks ago when I looked at the Search Engine Land columnists’ calendar and saw that my next “Small Is Beautiful” column would be published on Valentine’s Day. Any time you publish on a holiday or special event, you pretty much have a free pass to write a cheesy article and get to skip the monthly What on earth am I going to write about next? quandary. So, with that in mind, here’s my latest SEL column:

7 Things I Love About Small Business SEO

Hope you like it.

Meanwhile, Jan Norman of the Orange County Register ...

A lot of great photographers are scared to put their photos online because it’s so easy for other people to steal their work. I totally understand that. I’m hardly a great photographer, and I don’t want people stealing my photos, either! But I do want them to use my photos.

In the past year or two, bloggers and other content developers have clued in to Flickr as a great source of usable photography. And that opens up an opportunity for anyone with a camera!

I’ve been sharing photos on Flickr since 2004. I use Creative Commons licensing to tell people, ...

This is part three in a series on social marketing using Yahoo! Answers. If you missed earlier installments, please begin with the series introduction.

Yahoo AnswersYahoo! Answers is the #2 reference site on the Internet (behind Wikipedia). Its popularity provides an opportunity for smart online marketers to acquire targeted referral traffic, as well as indirect search engine traffic thanks to the site’s growing popularity in major SERPs — Google’s, in particular. Earlier in this series, I’ve talked about what YA is and why you should use it; in this final installment, I’ll share tips on how to use Yahoo! Answers for marketing and ...

I have a story to tell you. I was chatting with Andrew Shotland today and shared this with him, and realized it belongs here on SBS, too.

First, the background

Freecycle logoAbout a month ago, Andrew wrote a post about Freecycle, a network of local mailing lists where people essentially give away their unwanted junk to others on the list who need/want it. You know, one man’s junk is another man’s treasure — that kind of thing. It’s cool. And it’s a way to get exposure in front of a local audience.

In the comments of Andrew’s post, I mentioned that I had been ...

This is part two in a series on social marketing using Yahoo! Answers. You may want to start reading with the series introduction.

Yahoo! Answers is a popular question-and-answer service that’s grown to be the #2 reference site on the Internet. With such heavy traffic, YA offers opportunities for some businesses and professionals to gain exposure, improve branding, and acquire web site traffic. And Yahoo! is perfectly fine with using the service this way, so long as you work within the site guidelines.

Why Use Yahoo! Answers

YA is a natural fit for any business where knowledge and expertise is your main sales tool. ...

This is part one in a series on social marketing using Yahoo! Answers. You may want to start reading with the series introduction.

What Is Yahoo! Answers?

Yahoo! Answers (YA for short) is one of Yahoo!’s social media success stories. The question-and-answer service launched in December, 2005, and, according to Hitwise, it surpassed the market share of the now-defunct Google Answers within two months.

Usage Stats

In August, 2007, comScore listed Yahoo! Answers as the #2 reference site on the web, behind only Wikipedia. Yahoo’s own data from the same time shows the site with millions of users and millions of answers in the ...

Are you into social media marketing? If so, Yahoo! Answers probably isn’t very high on your radar. Sites like digg, StumbleUpon, and del.icio.us are talked about much more often. But when used correctly, Yahoo! Answers can be a vital complement to a social marketing plan.

Yahoo AnswersI’ve been using Yahoo! Answers for almost two years now; I started using it shortly after launching this blog. In that time, Yahoo! Answers has become a Top 5 source of referral traffic for me. Can it become the same for you? Perhaps. If you want to give it a try, I’ll share a plan ...

iPhone themeIF you run a WordPress blog, and

IF you believe you do or will get a fair amount of traffic from iPhone and iPod Touch users,

THEN you should check out this WordPress plugin and theme from Content Robot. It creates an iPhone-friendly version of your blog theme for mobile users; people visiting your blog on a traditional browser see your regular theme.

Pretty cool, eh?

Google Maps is already on the iPhone. It’s supposedly coming soon to gas stations. Google is even sending people door-to-door to promote Google Maps business listings.

That may seem like a “let’s throw everything at the wall and see what sticks” approach to marketing, but the numbers show that Google’s non-stop effort to promote Google Maps is working. However, I suspect it’s much more to do with what Google is doing in its main SERPs than any of the above marketing ideas; the data seems to bear witness to that.

Heather Hopkins recently shared data on the Hitwise blog that shows ...

If you’re a subscriber to the SBS RSS feed, be on the lookout tonight (and maybe tomorrow) for a potentially long “Matt added these links to his del.icio.us account” post. And they’ll be really old links being added, too.

bloglines clippingsIn the early days of this blog, I used the CLIPPINGS feature inside Bloglines to save articles of interest. Now, I save all that stuff in my del.icio.us account. This seems like as good a time as any to take the old Bloglines clippings and move them over to del.icio.us. I’m going to keep using the latter exclusively — no more Bloglines ...

SEMMYS logoRoll out the red carpet: We have winners in the inaugural SEMMY Awards, honoring some of the best content from the search marketing industry. We started with 127 authors representing 111 blogs/sites, and now we have one winner in 15 categories.

The 2008 SEMMY Winners will be announced at 12:00 pm ET/9:00 am PT today at www.semmys.org. (I’m tempted to list each winner here on SBS, but that wouldn’t be right.) Each category winner will be revealed one-at-a-time, and I’ll cut the drama this time: There’ll only be one minute in between each winner announcement.

Congrats to all the winners!

Here’s my roundup of the best search/marketing posts during January. If you’re new to SBS, this is a monthly feature. You can find earlier “Best Of”s for each month in the archives. Only rule is that my own posts are not eligible.

What about the SEMMYS?, you ask. Well, as I’ve been saying all along, the goal is to not be using these roundups for next year’s awards.
