30 Apr This post is from from my other blog here Summary: If you follow me on Twitter, you’ll be helping to raise money for a good cause. Please follow me, then come back to read on for more details….. Twittering for CharityIt’s no secret that I’ve been trying to be the last person on Twitter for some time now. You may also know that Jeff Quipp (of the Toronto-based agency Search Engine People) was also not on Twitter, and has been challenging me to see who could last the longest without joining. Well, we’ve put out heads together and have decided to sign up, and raise some money in the process. Here’s ...

29 Apr This post is from from my other blog here I know I shouldn’t post about this … heck, some of you will tell me I shouldn’t even look at it, but one of those coolio Firefox plugins makes the little green bar show up right down there where my eyes always look, so I just notice these things. Anyway, toolbar PageRank has been updated. Some things I’ve noticed:

27 Apr This post is from from my other blog here Right after my Local Search Workshop at the SBMU show in Houston on Tuesday, I flew to Long Beach to catch the second day of the SMX Social Media conference. This was another small show — just about 150 in attendance from what I could tell. Just as I did in NYC last October, I spoke on Yahoo! Answers. And in the process of updating my presentation, Yahoo! supplied some astonishing new data about the explosive growth that Yahoo! Answers is experiencing right now. How about 11 million new answers per month just on the U.S. site?! Have a look ...

The “this one” I was referring to was Small Business Marketing Unleashed 2008, the first of what I think is going to become a very successful conference series. SBMU took a different approach to putting on a conference, and I think they nailed it. What Was DifferentSize: Attendance was purposely limited to a small number. ...

The 2-day conference formally kicks off tomorrow morning. I’ll be presenting the SEO Success Pyramid during the opening session, and then doing a Local Search Workshop on Tuesday. I got in early enough today to walk around the grounds just a bit, and this is by far the most unique conference location I’ve ever been to — ...
16 Apr This post is from from my other blog here I’m finally finished. After griping about the challenge of putting together an interesting 90-minute presentation on a single topic, I’m actually somewhat pleased with the final results. I’m talking about the “Local Search Workshop” I’ll be leading next week at the Small Business Marketing Unleashed conference in Houston.
So, what on earth am I going to do for an hour-and-a-half? Rather than one long talk/speech, I’m going to do four separate local search presentations, with time for question-and-answer after each one. The PPT is finished, and it’s a Rand-like 71 slides. Yikes! My OutlineHere’s what I’ll be covering in the Local Search ...
16 Apr This post is from from my other blog here For those of you who are new SBS readers & subscribers, here’s a list of noteworthy posts you probably missed from one year ago. I try to put together a post like this each month.

14 Apr This post is from from my other blog here Give a bad Web site to a good SEO, and you have a match made in heaven. A good SEO knows what tools to use when fixing a site. I don’t mean these kinds of tools (i.e., Firefox plugins, Greasemonkey scripts, etc.) in the literal sense, I mean figurative tools. Like this: Do I need to take a hammer and chainsaw to this site, or is a paintbrush more appropriate?
One of the hot topics last week in SEO circles was an article at SEOpranos about hiring an SEO expert/company. It’s a very good article, as evidenced by the amount of discussion ...

Congrats to Taylor Pratt of Gonzo SEO for a dominating performance — no one else passed 100 points, and Taylor outscored Eric Lander (2nd place) by 14 points for the title. In other words, he crushed us all. Yours truly finished an embarrassing 13th (out of 16 active contestants), which is probably about what I deserve after ignoring college basketball all year long. Here are the full, final standings. I’ll be ...

07 Apr This post is from from my other blog here A client recently asked me to share a few blogging tips and recommend some good articles to read. I went a little overboard with the recommended reading portion of that task, and then decided to go whole-hog and put together this huge list of 61 recommended articles and posts about blogging. Now you can just bookmark this one article and you’re all set.
I’ll divide these into a few categories, but some of the articles could probably fit into more than one category. General Blog Tips

03 Apr This post is from from my other blog here MSN’s Local Search property, Live Search Maps, used to rely on Localeze for all its business listings. If you wanted to add or edit a listing in MSN Local, that’s where you went to take care of it.
02 Apr This post is from from my other blog here When you do a business name/city name search on Google, there’s a good chance you’re going to get a Local Onebox result returned with the business name, a link to its web site, and a map showing its location. But what about when the business has no web site? And also hasn’t claimed a listing in Google’s Local Business Center? SBS reader Eric M. pointed me toward something I’ve not noticed before: Google is grabbing the business listing from Yelp or Citysearch, and quite likely from other sites when necessary. Here’s an example:
I think I’ve seen this before, although judging from ...
