I’m bullish on hyperlocal blogging. It’s already popular in many larger cities; Seattle, for example, has a great community of bloggers who are not writing about the city, but writing about their own neighborhoods — and doing it well. Local blogging is also big in the real estate industry, which is a natural fit: Real estate agents are expected to be experts on the cities, towns, and neighborhoods they cover, so they should have plenty of knowledge and experience to rely on when blogging.

Local Blogging

When David Mihm interviewed me earlier this month, one of the great questions he asked was ...

Don’t quote me on this, but I’m pretty sure the original plan was to do another Small Business Marketing Unleashed conference next year, probably around a year after the first one wrapped up last month in Houston. Then this happened: Robert, Jennifer, Rachel, Vickie, and the whole gang hit an absolute home run with SBMU #1. (You may remember my conference review: “The small business owners who were there just spent the best $1,000 of their business lives.”)

So, back by popular demand is Small Business Marketing Unleashed #2, which will take place September 22 and 23 in Columbus, Ohio. What’s ...

Yahoo logoFor the past month or so, some folks on WebmasterWorld have been discussing recent changes in Yahoo’s SERPs. Some of the more recent comments suggest that Yahoo is looking heavily at keywords in domain names.

I agree 1,000%.

As I type this, I’m looking at a site that is currently at #10 on Yahoo for [cityname real estate]. No state modifier or anything, just the city name. This is a competitive term, although not as bad as Seattle Real Estate or Las Vegas Real Estate. Here’s what you need to know about the site ranking at #10:

SEO Success PyramidI’ve now presented the SEO Success Pyramid to two different audiences, and each time I’ve learned something new about it.

Presentation #1

The first presentation was at the Small Business Marketing Unleashed conference last month in Houston. The presentation lasted about 20-25 minutes. In the process of creating and rehearsing that presentation, I learned a lot about the content itself: The blocks on the pyramid aren’t a step-by-step process, but the levels are (almost) a step-by-step process. I realized that the items on the bottom level are all about you or your company, and preparing yourself for success. They have nothing ...

twitter screenshotIf I’ve learned one thing in three weeks of using Twitter, it’s this: It takes a lot longer to reach 500 followers than I expected.

Jeff Quipp and I are still Twittering for charity, trying to see who can reach 500 followers first and win some money for our favorite charity. Jeff and I each put up $250 of our own cash, and then a couple friends got involved, too: Will Scott of Search Influence left a comment saying he’d also throw in $250, and Li Evans put in $50 on top of that.

So, at the moment we’re going to ...

Merchant Circle logoSmall business owners are upset (again) at Merchant Circle over what the business owners are calling “fishy” marketing tactics, “an obvious scam,” and a “sneaky way of doing business.” They’re venting in the comments of a Merchant Circle post I wrote in September, 2006, which described the strange, automated marketing calls Merchant Circle was making.

This blog isn’t the only place small business owners are reporting such marketing calls. An old John Battelle post about Merchant Circle has a running commentary that details the types of calls Merchant Circle makes to small businesses. You can start here to read comments ...

SEO Success PyramidSmall businesses rely on word-of-mouth marketing; I’ve never found one that didn’t. Some rely on it more than others, but I think every small business needs happy customers and/or interested observers to help spread the business name to friends.

This human element of marketing is part of the SEO Success Pyramid, and can come in several forms: buzz/viral marketing, word-of-mouth, community development, and more. These aren’t found among the pyramid blocks, but they help you along as you work your way up the pyramid. They’re the gray arrows on each side pointing from bottom to top.

Community was the focus of ...

sempdx logoCareer craziness aside, I’ll still be in Portland next week to take part in an evening “Hot Seat” event hosted by the great folks at SEMpdx. The plan is to give a somewhat lengthy presentation on the SEO Success Pyramid, and then join several members of SEMpdx to do a clinic on three Web sites. (By “somewhat lengthy,” I mean it’ll be longer and more detailed than the 20-25 minute version I gave at SBMU in Houston last month. I’m aiming for 45-60 minutes in Portland.)

Here are the details you need to know:

Date: May 20, 2008 Registration & Networking: 5:30 PM Program: ...

I’m still enjoying an almost Internet-free vacation, but found a way to hop online from our current HQ and am really enjoying catching up on more than 1,200 unread blog posts in my Bloglines account. (Didya catch the sarcasm in that sentence?)

Since Mother’s Day arrives in just a couple hours, and I’ll be spending the day with the best two moms in the world (my wife and my mom), here are a couple links both of my favorite moms would be proud of:

One of the things I came upon while trying to catch up is my latest SEL “Small Is ...

It’s not happening quickly, but Yahoo continues to integrate Flickr photo content across its network. The newest instance I’ve seen is on Yahoo’s Local News beta site. Here’s the Yakima-Pasco local news page:

Yahoo Local News beta

If you were to follow the link above the photo, and then scroll down just a tiny little bit, you’ll find this little content widget in the right column which — at the moment I’m typing this — is showing 16 photos from MY Flickr photostream. Yowza! Four photos appear at a time, and there’s a nice Ajaxy scrollbar that will show the rest of the photos when ...

Today is the first day since the summer of 1990 that I’ve woken up without a job.

It’s true: Due to a reorganization at Marchex, my position was eliminated. Yesterday was my last day. It was a great 18 months, and I was fortunate to work with some of the smartest people I’ve ever met. To compare where my career was 18 months ago to where it is now … it boggles the mind. Night and day. I’ve been blessed.

Perhaps someday down the road I’ll look back in more depth, but this post is about looking forward (and helping another search ...

WOW. I’ve been doing these monthly roundups for the better part of 16-18 months, and April 2008 will go down as the best month yet. There are some fantastic articles linked below. If you’re new to SBS, this is a monthly feature. You can find earlier “Best Of”s for each month in the archives. Only rule is that my own posts are not eligible.

Oh, before you read, another reminder to please follow me on Twitter! (Remember, it’s for charity.)
