How To Walk A Mile In A Search Engine’s Shoes It began as an article extolling the great value of using the site: search command for some quick SEO site analysis — that alone can reveal a lot about what the search engines see in your site. And then I decided I should probably include some other ways to figure out what the engines see/think about your site. What about the small business success stories?, you ask. I plan to continue that series ...

Sage Lewis is presenting on the “Building a Community” topic right now (shhhh, I’m paying attention while I blog) and I’ve already helped open the conference with my SEO Success Pyramid presentation. One of the highlights for me last night at the opening night charity event was the chance to meet guitarist extraordinaire John Tuggle — you may recall John as one of the small business owners I profiled earlier this year on Search Engine Land. ...

18 Sep This post is from from my other blog here Lots going on these days in the local search world. I was about to start writing a bunch of quick posts about everything, then decided to just condense it all a bit into one roundup post. And that’s what you’re looking at right now. Without further ado, here’s what’s happening: The Perils of Not Claiming Your Business in Google MapsAnaheim florist Cathy Hillen-Rulloda shared news a few days ago about a developing problem on Google Maps: Some unscrupulous people are hijacking business listings that have not been claimed by the actual business owner, and changing the business information so it promotes ...

17 Sep This post is from from my other blog here It’s that time of year again: Time to find out if you’re spending too much time on SEO and in desperate need of a break. Here’s the 2008 version of “Signs You Need a Break from SEO.” Enjoy!
1.) While everyone else searches for wedding photographers, senior portrait photographers, and the like, you’ve spent weeks looking for a “social media avatar photographer.” 2.) The thought that SoloSEO is actually a team of two gives you a slight headache. 3.) You travel to so many conferences that your spouse struggles to keep track of your whereabouts. And one day, while trying to update her ...

16 Sep This post is from from my other blog here In a move that was probably way overdue, Google has finally announced some rules for local businesses using Google Maps to promote their businesses. It’s a welcome announcement considering the many spam problems in the Google Maps system. Best of all, the rules are very specific with do’s and don’ts for creating multiple listings, using keywords incorrectly, and even how to use the description and custom attributes of your business listing. You can read the Business Listing Quality Guidelines on Google, and my lengthier post on SEM Clubhouse. 12 Sep This post is from from my other blog here The Google Webmaster Central team hit a home run this week with their latest “Popular Picks” thread — this is where webmasters are invited to fire away with any questions on their minds, and the Google crew picks some of the popular questions to answer. The most recent set of answers has been highlighted on the GWC blog, but a few of the answers deserve a call out here on SBSM. Google SitelinksMaile Ohye was super-generous with her detailed explanation of Google Sitelinks. Use the link to read the full post, but here’s what stood out for me: In search results, the ...

09 Sep This post is from from my other blog here I’ve been living in directory submission land lately, looking for quality directories where I can submit my wife’s and my four local blogs, which are new and in need of some basic links. It’s been a while since I’ve gone out on the hunt for links from quality directories, and the experience these past few days hasn’t been good: There’s a lot more junk out there than not. This can be a problem for the small business owner who may struggle to know how to tell a quality directory from the rest. How to Judge a Web DirectoryOne directory I visited recently ...

08 Sep This post is from from my other blog here GroupThink is where I turn the blog post over to you. Whenever a new search engine launches, or when other search engines make news, industry watchers always wonder if it’s the next “Google killer.” My theory: What will really kill Google some day is the company’s insatiable appetite for personal data about you, me, and everything we do online. In its attempts to own and organize our online lives, Google will eventually cross the line of what the general public will accept. Your turn: What’s the real Google killer? Will there ever be one?

07 Sep This post is from from my other blog here It’s been a while since I’ve had reason to go looking for instances of pages from Yahoo Answers appearing in the SERPs, but I found a couple examples this weekend. See, we have a new puppy here at Casa McGee, and it’s been … oh … I think about 30 years since I’ve owned a dog. So, I’m a little rusty on what it’s like to be a dog owner. Here are the two Yahoo Answers pages I found ranking very highly in Google: (try not to laugh at the second one)
Neither of the pages from Yahoo Answers that you ...
07 Sep This post is from from my other blog here Two companies have just hopped on as advertisers here on Small Business Search Marketing, and I’d like to take a moment to thank and introduce them: From their web site: “2008 saw the launch of Netklix 2.0, a brand new PPC advertising network offering low cost online advertising opportunities to PPC Advertisers, both large and small. For Publishers we serve the best performing PPC Adverts into their PPC AdSpace units ensuring their earnings are maximised.” “A human-edited web directory whose aim is to showcase quality Internet resources in user-friendly and search engine-friendly category structures. 03 Sep This post is from from my other blog here You may remember the name John Tuggle of Learning Guitar Now. He was the subject of my small business success story on Search Engine Land back in April. His guitar teaching business wasn’t going anywhere until John decided to jump headfirst into what you’d call Web 2.0 Marketing: blogging, doing a podcast, putting videos on YouTube, offering guitar lessons via Skype, pushing his content on social media sites, and more. Here’s what I wrote in that April column: “…in just a couple months they’ve already worked. Gibson Guitars found John on YouTube and added him as a recommended instructor on their ...
