While the tech team are working on the in-house built member widgets, here's another widget to help you share the great articles on Gooruze with your blog and website readers. Nice part is it comes with a bit of Gooruze branding.

It was developed using widgetbox, but if you just want to load it straight onto your site, the codes below the image:

One of the post conference chats I was involved in after PodCamp Perth was Google's de-indexing of a local Perth blog. www.enjoyperth.net has been a key source for information about Perth events and social goings-on for a couple of years and always featured strongly in Google's results.

Simone's blog was dropped from the Google index a couple of weeks ago for what we speculated was a link infringement. Duncan Riley (one of our founding gooruze) picked up the case and after some discussion with an undisclosed Google employee - raised the issue on TechCrunch.

In a prime example of the power of social media - Duncan's post not only started up a flurry of discussion about Google's new link penalizing efforts - but also helped to uncover the real reason behind enjoyperth's mysterious de-indexing.

One of TechCrunch's readers uncovered some spammy links at the bottom of the blog - which a hacker had placed on the site. Duncan's TechCrunch post even drew discussion from Google's very own Matt Cutts and Adam Lasnik. With Matt promising to check in on the re-inclusion request - i'll be interested to see how long it takes for enjoyperth.net to be re-indexed...

POWER to the Social Media !!!

jumpcut_logo.pngJumpCut - is Yahoo!’s relatively new online video/photo community and mash-up service. After giving it a whirl this week, i was impressed by the ease in which a novice can whip up professional looking videos and image slideshows.

As they state on the website - it’s an easy way to upload, edit (mash-up) and share videos online for free. There’s no shortage of photo and video sharing communities and services online, but it’s JumpCut’s editing tools and collaborative functionality that caught my attention.

They’ve taken the often daunting task (for the non video savvy) of editing image slideshows and videos and made ...

Are the rumors true? not at this stage, but the conversations surrounding Blodget's claims and a recent post by Douglas A. McIntyre of 24/7 Wall Street do get you thinking. McIntyre suggests the bigger blogs such as Techcrunch, GigaOm and alike are probably worth figures around or over the $100 million mark.

With their reach far exceeding traditional media sources like WSJ et al, then valuations in the multi "multi" millions are sure to come, and as he puts it:

"...with the internet operations at newspapers and some other tradition media companies making very little headway, the big blogs take on a very significant attraction. They reach audiences in great numbers. They have credibility. They are not expensive to run. And, they make money."

"TechCrunch has an audience about a third of CNet (CNET). And CNet is in bad shape. It's blog business has not caught on. In early 2006, its shares were $16. Now they trade at under $8. Do they need a way to improve their reach and image with the online tech crowd?" so maybe the idea is worth considering for CNET execs.

Surely the likes of CNET and other traditional media companies have these highly trafficked authority blogs on their acquisition radar (remember Yahoo! grabbed Engagdet a while back)...and good luck to blog owners like Michael Arrington, who've done the hard yards for years and built up an almost "cult" readership.

I wonder how much mine is worth....(free to good home) lol

Rumors have started about plans by Google to launch a virtual world to rival Second Life and Habbo. The new 3D social network, apparently called “My World”, will make use of the Google Earth and Google Maps applications and is penciled in for launch later this year.

The speculation started after a survey was circulated to students of Arizona State University. According to Google Operating System, where i first found the story: rene-lemerle.gooruze.com

Arizona State University’s students have the opportunity to test a new product “that will be publicly launched later this year”. ...

podcamp-perth-logo.pngPodCamp, the international new media community Unconference, is making its way down to Australia in October 2007 and will be hosted in the sunny city of Perth. rene-lemerle.gooruze.com

I’m lucky enough to be a part of the organizing team for the inaugural PodCamp Perth, which will take place on the 27-28 October 2007 at Central Tafe in Perth.

For those not familiar with PodCamp, it’s an FREE “unconference” aimed at connecting people interested in blogging, podcasting, social media and networks, video on the net, and newmedia. An environment were people with a common interest and curiosity ...

digfoot-logo.pngLeveraging the social web phenomenon is “front of mind” for most modern marketers, and a new start-up called digFoot aims to help us to identify which ones to target. digFoot is a directory (not very web 2.0 sounding) of social networks on the web.

Admittedly, trying to find which social networks fit a niche, or tap into the right target market, is a challenge with traditional search engines like Google or Yahoo! Even more social orientated search services serve up a plethora of irrelevant results - so the premise of digFoot is promising.

The service is not just for marketers like me ...

usb-drive.pngThis is a bit techy, but a really important development in the pipeline. The team at Intel, and other leading technology companies, are working on a new version of the Universal Serial Bus technology  that will see it able to transfer data 10 times faster than the current USB 2.0 version.

The USB 3.0 initiative will untilize fibre optics alongside the existing copper wires allowing it to transfer at rates of upto 5Gbps - now that’s some a serious transfer rate. (more…)
