Were you up before 6 a.m. today? If so, and if you had gone to Google’s homepage, you would’ve been greeted by an interesting site.

The home page of Google was appearing like a negative photograph image, with everything that us usually in white, appearing in black, and all of the text was in white.

Since I’m recovering from a bunch of computer problems this week, I assumed momentarily that I was having a video card issue. However a closer look revealed the true reason for the color change.

Google did this to draw attention to Earth Hour, and they linked to another ...

How many add-ons, toolbars, bookmarks, plugins, and other tweaks have you made to your default Firefox installation? If you’re a specialty user, you may have several dozen add ons, and in my own case, I’ve got 27 separate Firefox extensions alone, (which I now know because I just counted them).

With all of those, and with the the custom toolbar and bookmark options I’ve managed to tweak, recreating what I’ve “created” over time with my Firefox is just not something that could be done without a monumental effort. Just like Windows, in order to to do my job, I must have certain plug ins, ...

I’m a board member of the Oregon Computer Consultants Association and at each monthly meeting, there’s a few minutes where people ask questions about strange behavior, and get help from their peers.

Well, the meeting was last night (Ben Lee from Intel) , and I had nothing to ask, but TODAY is another matter. The following message just went out to the entire group -

Hi everyone - Here’s my Stump the Geek question… I rebooted my computer this AM and went snowboarding.

I came home and it said “Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt…” etc. –

...

Qwest Internet service here in Portland Oregon has apparently begun to randomly block port 25 for its customers, just like Comcast did last year. This renders users helpless to send email using their own domain from their web host’s email server like most businesses do.

Also just like Comcast, they are not doing it to all users yet, and they have provided no notice to users for whom they have done this. It’s only due to spending several hours on the phone last summer that I can offer this solution.

If this has happened to you, simply open your mail client, go ...

A post this morning on Sphinn really got my fire going… Apparently, there is a document floating around out there that is supposedly a set of guidelines for the search quality team at Google.

Whether it’s legit or not, you can tell that someone put a lot of thought into it, and I think even Matt Cutts himself would have a hard time arguing with anything there.

The entire 43 page document keeps referring to the simple fact fact that a site has to offer added value, or it’s spam. While I certainly can’t say whether it’s from Google, I can’t imagine ...

There’s been a nice addition to one of my favorite pieces of link building helper software with this morning’s update. It just keeps getting better and better to help your employees make their link building time actually count, and actually build a couple of links, instead of doing research.

  1. Added: “Toggle Highlighting “NoFollow” Links” option.
  2. Added: “Most Recent Post Date” column that shows the date of the most recent post on the blog. Some of the blogs most recent posts are over 2 years old. You can set a filter and remove blogs that haven’t had an entry since a selected date.

It’s ...

Last night I was working ofn a few things on my wifes laptop while we were watching a TV show, and like always, I didn’t “put everything away” and I left a Notepad document open with a few notes, and a few browser windows.

This morning when I got up, I went to the laptop to “get my stuff” and found that Microsoft had seized control overnight and rebooted my computer.

This is because, like most people, I leave my computers set to update automatically. Most of my hard core tech friends scoff at automatic updates, but for me, I know they’ll ...

When I first got my Blackberry, I was stunned and appalled that it would not sync with my email on the server. How ridiculous!

This meant that if I did not manually delete my mail from my phone, (choices were one at a time, or “entire day”) then over time it would fill up with hundreds, even thousands of emails.

This was completely stupid, and that’s why I wrote about it.

However, they seem to have come up with a solution, but it doesn’t work unless YOU make a change. Recently, I had a reason to log into the Blackberry mail server, and ...

As if I needed another reason to be glad I’m attending Elite Retreat this year, Shoemoney has announced that WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg is going to be speaking.

I feel that I owe a lot of my personal and client success to my use of the best blogging platform in the world, and I’m really looking forward to meeting Matt, and thanking him personally.

I passed on going to  SMX West (and likely SES Jan Jose) to be able to attend ER instead, and wow, am I glad I did!

Thanks Shoe!

I’ll be filling out my speaker proposal soon for Webmaster World Pubcon 2008, because the date has just been announced, and it’s being moved back to November. Maybe if I submit early I can get a topic more exciting than web hosting and SEO issues ;)

PubCon Las Vegas 2008, will take place at the Las Vegas Convention Center Tuesday through Friday, November 11th through 14th, and will be in the North Halls of the convention center.

Four fun (and educational) days in Vegas, baby...

I guess no matter who you are, it’s easy to forget about the small stuff -Like renewing your SSL certificate to safely collect millions of dollars hourly…

I tried to log into a Google Adwords account today, and this is what I saw -

An expired security certificate. It showed up in both Firefox and Internet Explorer, so I grabbed a couple of screen shots…

After reformatting my computer, I posted about easily editing the “save attachment as” dialog box to enable me to save Outlook file attachments in the folders of my choice.

That was a big help, but only solved half the problem, because without installing some third pary software like Tweak UI, I was unable to find a way to do it in my regular Windows “save as” dialog box.   Even with 4 gigs of ram, my PC struggles with Dragon Naturally Speaking and Camtasia always running and ready to go, as well as all of my usual stuff, so using Tweak UI ...

An attorney got in touch with me a couple of months ago after reading a blog post I had written at SEMpdx. Google had just drastically lowered visibility of the option where new advertisers could opt out of the Content Network in Google AdWords, and I was compelled to point out that I thought it was sneaky.

During our phone conversation, the subject came up of whether I might consider being the named plaintiff on this pending class action lawsuit against Google over this very issue! Scott Hendison vs. Google? Ummm… no thank you. ;)

What is the Content Network? Google’s content ...

I was commenting on a blog this morning when I saw that there were a number of comment author links that were NoFollowed, and a number that were not.  The blog owner was singling out comments for approval to allow the passing of link juice.

That reminded me to check a few of my recent comments for validity, and make sure nobody was guilty of blatant link juicing ;) and I noticed that something in my DoFollow plugin was broken.

I’ve been using Greg Boser and Dax’s modified DoFollow plugin, which used to work great, but now with the new Wordpress version, ...

Have you ever tried to remove a Google Analytics account? what a pain in the neck this is, and I really can’t understand why.

The other day I ran up against my account limit of having too many Analytics accounts associated with my Gmail address. Going through my list of domains, I realized that there were lots of old accounts from months and even years ago that I no longer use and wanted to remove.

I had looked once before for an easy way to remove them and never could figure it out. I looked again, and there still is not a ...
