Last year I made it a New Years Resolution goal to read a book a week. I’ve actually had that goal for the past several years now but it wasn’t until this year that I started documenting all my reading so I’d actually know if I hit my mark. I did.

So if you ever want to know what a person like me reads, here you go. This list incorporates all my business and personal reading. The links will either go to my reviews of the books which I have already posted here on the blog or directly to the Amazon ...

As difficult as it may seem to believe, 2007 is nearing its end. Where the frick did the time go? As a writer, it’s time for me to look back on the last year and to start thinking about some resolutions to ring in the new year.

  1. Read. It is often said that the best writers are great readers. In order to master the language, you have to read it and fully submerse yourself in it. Subscribe to other writers’ blogs to get tips, subscribe to Dictionary.com’s Word of the Day emails, and just read anything to expand your mind. One ...

This is the last of my book reviews for the year. I had a pile of completed books that I hadn’t had a chance to write up my reviews of them until this week. Hence the all-review-all-the-time thing we got going on here at EMP this week. Next week I’ll be publishing a complete list of all the books and documents (not counting blogs) that I’ve read in 2007. That’ll be a treat for all you readers out there.

Anyway, on with the show. I got a chance to read SEOmoz’s Viral Marketing and Linkbait on the Web document. Yes, you ...

Personality Plus: How to Understand Others by Understanding YourselfPersonality Plus: How to Understand Others by Understanding Yourself Author: Florence Littauer Paperback: 208 pages Cost: $10.93 Published: 1983

Years ago, and a few times since, I took a personality test that was unbelievably accurate at describing me and how I act, react and respond to life situations. For the past ten years, I’ve been looking for that test and finally found what I was looking for with Florence Littauer’s book Personality Plus.

Littauer classifies the four primary personality types: Popular Sanguine, Perfect Melancholy, Powerful Choleric and Peaceful Phlegmatic. Most every person fits into one of these personality categories, while some (like me) are near ...

Search Engine Marketing KitUpon first glance, The Search Engine Marketing Kit, authored by Dan Thies and Dave Davies, appears to be a more daunting read than it really is. The material stands about three inches thick complete with 4-inch three-ring binder. The thickness is deceptive in that the pages are printed only on one side. But running at over 350 pages, the SEM kit is no slouch in dishing out the info.

Designed to be the go-to manual for all things SEM related, the SEM Kit successfully delivers. The kit, which includes a CD loaded with documents, covers search engines, SEO basics, advanced SEO, ...

Google’s PageRank and Beyond: The Science of Search Engine Rankings Google Page RankAuthors Amy N. Langville & Carl D. Meyer did a fabulous job with this book. Their writing allows you to actually visualize something that is extremely mathematical and complex, not an easy thing to do. It also incorporates illustrations that go along with the text and algorithms to make it easy to understand. This book gets into the nitty gritty of page rank from crawling and indexing methods to the algorithms used to figure out page rank. Now I will admit that the the algorithms were a bit confusing for myself ...

Christmas WindowIn copywriting, the headline is one of the most crucial elements. If effective, it will get your reader’s attention and cause them to want to read on; obviously, if not effective and well written, you’ll lose them before you even get them. Similarly, holiday window displays exist solely to get shoppers’ attentions and make them want to go in the store. If a window display is boring and lifeless, shoppers will most likely walk right by without even a glance.

In order to be effective, headlines (and even holiday window displays) must do the following:

Do you like how Google AdWords have changed the keyword tool within AdWords?

In case you haven’t seen it yet … within your ad group, click on the keyword tool, (Your options are slightly different if you use the keyword tool linked from Tools)

You’ll find you no longer have tabs at the top of the tool for keywords and getting keywords from your site. Instead you’ll find there are three radio buttons, Descriptive words or phrases, Website content, or Existing keyword.

When the Descriptive words or phrases option is selected (which is the default selection) you enter keywords or phrases just ...

Google vs Yahoo

  by st0n3y at 10:30
This post is from from my other blog here

Ok, I realize that most if not all SEO’s know about the below mentioned tool but I wanted to let everyone know about it. This is a neat tool to prove that Google and Yahoo have completely different ranking tools. This was first brought to my attention by Debra Mastaler during a phone conference and I found it very interesting and useful in many ways.

If you go to Google vs Yahoo it pops up with a preset keyword search. Enter in any keyword(s) that you want to compare, click compare them. It’s as easy as that. You can see ...

Developing your site so that it enhances your visitors’ shopping experience and improves conversion rates does not automatically mean that you have a site that is friendly to the search engines. Similarly developing a site that is search engine friendly doesn’t automatically make it user-friendly. But these things are also not mutually exclusive. You can please both search engines and website visitors.

While search engines are important, keep in mind that your visitors are even more important. When making edits to your site always consider the implications on both your human visitors and the search engines as ...

I haven’t much enjoyed my subscription to e-consultancy thus far. Most of the documents I’ve reviewed were not quite what I was expecting or useless (at least to me). The Online Retail 2006 guide is a clear exception. (To be fair, I’ve only read a small handful of the documents available, and I do plan on reading more.) Unfortunately I can’t find a link to this document on their website, which means my glowing review will lead to disappointment for anyone trying to find it. They do also offer a 2007 Checkout Special but I haven’t looked at it to ...

las vegas At PubCon last week in beautiful Las Vegas, much of the emphasis was placed on the importance of using social media as a way to leverage any search engine optimization strategy. After talking with some people in the last week, it seems that there’s some confusion between social media and viral marketing / link baiting.

Social Media versus Viral Marketing / Link Baiting

Social media and viral marketing / link baiting are not one in the same. In order to use social media as a platform, you must first have some piece of viral marketing because social media sites use networking ...

DroughtEvery business goes through tough times. Expecting to have season after season of continuous growth without any dips or downturns is pretty much unreasonable. And despite all your strong marketing pushes, there will always be times when business isn’t as swift as you’d like it to be. But that doesn’t have to be cause for concern. Well, OK, concern is good, but there are things that you can do to make slow times a whole lot less stressful on you and your finances.

1) Prepare

There’s a great discussion started by Michael Dorausch regarding Matt Cutts’ three steps process to build a site and get a ton of traffic. Michael transcribed and organized Matt Cutts’ evening presentation at PubCon this past week. Cutts made many great suggestions that any webmaster old or new ought to consider.

Step 1 - Make a Compelling Service

Matt Cutts Compelling Content “If you’re trying to sell junk you’re going to have a much harder time. So spend the time, and the thing is you can start up a website really for a lot less money than you could even five or six years ago.

Total Usability Series Trust is a key usability issue when it comes to running a successful online business. Most people automatically view web businesses with a bias against them compared to their brick and mortar counterparts. Your ability to convince your visitors that yours is a trustworthy business is one of the key components to getting visitors to convert into customers.

Creating a website that conveys trust can be tricky. There are rarely any answers that are always “right” for every visitor. There are, however, several factors that have universal appeal to the weary shopper.

Another year has almost gone? How is your overall profit looking? Maybe it’s not quite what you had expected for the year. Well, step it up! Encourage yourself and employees to think outside the box the way many successful big and small fish companies have. Yes there may be failure but from failure you’ll learn and grow. “It’s fine to celebrate success but it is more important to heed the lessons of failure.” – Bill Gates.

Get together with your employees and take a look at your company; what would they change? You hired them so I hope you have ...

I often over hear Stoney on the telephone, describing to a prospective client, exactly what Pay-Per-Click entails. These explanations vary from one call to the next of course, depending on how familiar the person already is. Sometimes the explanation will be quick as “yes, we manage PPC accounts.” Other times the explanation goes much deeper into what are often overlooked as very basic description as to where the paid sponsored ads display in the search engine results.

Last week the Pole Position Marketing Team went to Las Vegas for Webmaster World PubCon 2007. While sitting in the Major PPC Engines: Vendor ...

Bob LoblawLast February, when Stoney told me of his diabolical plan to become a household name in the SEO community, I scoffed. Here was a guy who has been in SEO for almost ten years and remained a relative unknown. Sure, he made a few friends here and there and has been slowly building his reputation, but who would of thought 12 months ago that Stoney would be able to snag an interview with one of the biggest names in the SEO. And that’s not Stoney interviewing the big name, mind you… that’s the big name interviewing Stoney.

Thanks to PubCon and the Sales and Marketing department of Treasure Island in Las Vegas, I was able to finally take in my first real production in Sin City last week – “Mystère” …for no cost at all.

This Cirque Du Soleil show has been creating an awe-inspiring visual spectacular for over 10 years. I found the quality and level of entertainment provided by the musicians, acrobats, dancers and those handling the staging and lights to be astounding. Mystère provided the opportunity to the viewer to interpret the performance in many ways. Was it is intended to share the potential of ...

A website is much like a home. In order for it to function as intended it has to be built to be structurally sound top to bottom. On the web you can think of search engine spiders as the building inspector who come by from time to time making sure that all areas of your site can be properly access. This isn’t a perfect analogy of course because the search engines don’t issue citations if your site has blocked access to a bedroom. That, and they are also taking stock of your valuables, something that we ...

On Friday the team and I returned from PubCon 2008. I have to say that PubCon is one of those events I look forward to every year (even though this is only my second year!) For SEO conferences, PubCon is easily the least expensive one. But on an ROI level, it is also easily one that provides the most bang for your buck.

Here are a few sessions that I enjoyed the most:

Why, SEO?

  by st0n3y at 09:04
This post is from from my other blog here

question mark SEO The purpose of a search engine optimization marketing company is to carefully craft webpages and links in order to “optimize” the chance that their client’s pages will appear in the first few pages of search engine results; preferably on the first page. The truth is readers rarely look past the top 10-20 URLS found. SEO companies also look over their client’s webpages and give them a list of ideas to make their site more user-friendly and content relevant. SEO methods will not reach their full potential if your website is less then par and cryptic. SEO can get them there ...

We all have had our share of good and poor customer service, but my experience with Wal-Mart is one that I will not forget, and I was appalled to receive such unpleasant customer service. I went to Wal-Mart to purchase a cover for my electric blanket but was unable to find it in the department that carries all the blankets.
