Performing a complete website review is rarely easy. I’ve found that you can start a site analysis intending to spend just a few minutes looking over it only to find that it quickly spirals into a multi-hour marathon of research. Complete website reviews can be time consuming and often produce many more hours of work beyond that.

One of the problems is that people tend want to skip right to search engine optimization forgetting that users matter. Many people want to rush into the marketing without realizing that the website itself is part of the marketing process. ...

Celebrity ApprenticeThursday’s Celebrity Apprentice was a pretty lackluster episode. I was excited to see Marilu Henner and Vincent Pastore square off. I like both of them, but Marilu seems to be a much stronger leader than Vincent. I wasn’t sure who I was rooting for. I mean, I love it when Omarosa’s team loses, but I don’t want to see Marilu go.

The women have severe cohesiveness issues, thanks largely due to Omorosa. On the other hand, the guys, who work very well together, had some pre-task fireworks themselves. Which brings me to…

Craft of CopywritingSocial Media Marketing: How to Win Friends and Influence People, a post about how a book written 70 years ago has principles that still apply today, especially in the realm of social media. While much of the basics of copywriting will always apply, one chapter of Crompton’s book, Talking to the Housewife, is already pretty outdated.

The “creative types” defined in this book are men. The men are the advertisers and are the creative geniuses behind all great ads in ...

Going to SearchFest ‘08 in Portland? I am. I’ll be speaking on website architecture. The SEMpdx blog has just posted a mini interview with Stoney deGeyter (that’s me, I just wanted to get my name in the link!). Check it out and let me know if I’ll be seeing you there!

Blogging is a rather simple thing: jot a few thoughts about something, spell check, and publish. That’s it. Well, at least that’s what I thought a few years back. See, my initial thoughts about blogging consisted of writing something nobody found interesting and hoping to get as many comments as I could. I soon realized nobody really cared what color my cat was and why I hate traffic. I had very little readership and couldn’t figure out what the problem was. It took a few months to realize I was missing three important factors in creating a successful blog.

Be Unique ...

The Successful Investor by William J. O'NeilThe Successful Investor: What 80 Million People Need to Know to Invest Profitably and Avoid Big Losses Authors: William J. O’Neil Paperback: 183pages Cost: $8.76 Published: September, 2003

After dabbling with the stock market for a couple of years and finding both moderate success and spectacular failure, O’Neil’s book “The Successful Investor” pretty much confirmed what I already knew. I was doing this all wrong. That’s the depressing part. But the good part is that O’Neil teaches you how to do stock investing right.

“The Successful Investor” outlines five steps that every stock investor needs to know. Complete with stock charts and visual illustrations, O’Neil provides ...

Every day, we get businesses coming to us looking to improve their search engine rankings. They want to talk about an SEO campaign, but one quick look at their site and we see that SEO may not be the right approach for them. Usually in these cases, the site needs a complete usability makeover.

These businesses, however, don’t want to discuss website architecture, visitor usability, or even making their site search engine friendly. They want rankings and want them now.

I understand their standpoint. These are small businesses looking to purchase a service that will get them ...

I read “What’s Your Highest Click Through Rate (CTR)?” last week. Comments on the blog brought up good points. CTR can rock at every level. Ideally, we’d love to see our best CTR at the Account level, but we also track campaign level, ad group level, ad creative level and keyword level. If there’s going to be a poll in the future, I’d suggest it state/ask specifics. Also, for the record, I would point out that CTR isn’t as important as conversion rate. I’ve posted previously about an account with zero conversions. CTR doesn’t mean beans if you don’t get ...

Total Usability Series As more and more users gain access to the web, it becomes increasingly important to ensure that your website is accessible to all, not just a few. Just as businesses must comply with the American Disabilities Act to ensure proper access to customers with disabilities, businesses should do all they can to make their websites accessible to all users regardless of the means in which they access the site.

And of course not all accessibility issues involve meeting the needs of the disabled. What must be considered is the growing number of users that now access websites ...

Celebrity ApprenticeThis show keeps getting more and more interesting. It’s funny because here we have a bunch of people who are so successful and therefore so self confident in their own abilities that they think they are “king”. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a display of misplaced arrogance than what Gene Simmons displayed on Thursday night. He was so confident in himself, yet so far off the mark.

Which, of course, brings us to…

Business Lesson One: Even if the client is wrong, they are still right.

In the boardroom Gene was adamant that the Kodak people were wrong about their marketing ...

I recently read a post on Technology Review noting the new Google Knol project and its potential competition to Wikipedia as the web’s main authoritative web site. Google’s Knol aims to differientiate itself from Wikipedia by not allowing the public to update articles within the site. Rather Knol will use individual authors with their creditials displayed within the article. Knol aims to perfect what Wikipedia started - an online resource written by professionals. What also makes Knol unique is the ability for users to ‘vote’ on articles covering the same subject. According to Udi Manber, a V.P. of engineering, “for ...

The Eyes Have it by Kevin LeeThe Eyes Have It: How to Market in an Age of Divergent Consumers, Media Chaos and Advertising Anarchy Authors: Kevin Lee with Steve Baldwin Hardcover: 189 pages Cost: $16.47 Published: October, 2007

I didn’t know what to expect going into The Eye’s Have It. I know Kevin Lee’s reputation in the SEM industry, which is good, as well as his thoughts on the SEO industry (which can be way off base) so I’m sure those things colored my perception before I even began to read. But I have to say that whatever you know or think of Lee, this book is well worth reading.

The book takes you through a lot of the ...

I think that by now everyone pretty much agrees that words are an important part of your website and your online marketing campaign. While a picture may be worth a thousand words, sometimes just a few words can provide the right mental picture your audience needs in order to make that final buying decision.

For many business owners, writing can be a daunting task. Sure we know our products and services inside and out and putting what we know into words is easy enough, but that’s about as far as it gets.

Is that enough to ...

The true title should be “I Love My Job” … not so much because it is Pay-Per-Click, but more so because I am provided with the tools to do my job efficiently. In this ever changing world of the internet, things change so quickly that keeping up with the changes can be rough.

Not so with my job though cause ‘education time’ is built into the work day. One hour, every day, we’re to dedicate our time to research, study or just plain reading about our profession. I read so many posts a week - I wonder how those people ...

The SEMMYsEvery year as the entertainment industry gears up for the Oscars, movie studios, directors and producers put out “For Your Consideration” ads in attempt to influence the voters. OK, maybe influence is the wrong word here. No, it’s not.

But before I put out my own For Your Consideration blog post/ad for my fellow teammates, let’s talk about what the heck The SEMMYs are. The SEMMYs are the brainstorm of our buddy M2. While there are plenty of awards already for the blogging community, most honor the blog in total, rather than individual blog posts.

Mr. McGee has created the following award ...
