How do YOU measure up? Over the last 6 months of writing the SEO Geeks newsletter (http://www.huomah.com/dojo/seo-newsletter.html) I’ve been collecting a wide variety of posts dealing with web analytics… Just for fun, I thought to wrap them all up, with some that didn’t make it into the newsletter (gotta’ spread the luv, oui mon ami?) and post them in one place for everyone… Analytics have always been important and personally, always been fascinating (even before my SEO addiction). Like playing an instrument, it can seem...

This post is from from my other blog here

Hey gang just a quick note to let you know that I've put together a repository of search related videos (http://www.huomah.com/dojo/Videos/) in the Dojo that is open for all. Over the last few months I've included videos into the weekly SEO Geeks Newsletter (http://www.huomah.com/dojo/seo-newsletter.html)... I thought it would be good to put them all together in a searchable format for those that may be interested. Each week I shall be adding to the collection so be sure to book mark it...So far we have sections for;Information RetrievalSEO Strategies Interviews with...

Finding link spam via search marketing Forums OK, sure… the title is a bit egregious, but in many ways so is the patent that came out from the folks at Microsoft last week. As I was perusing my feed reader on Thursday I noticed a patent that DEFINITELY caught my attention (and I even laughed a bunch too..); Forum Mining for Suspicious Link Spam Sites Detection (http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-bool.html&r=1&f=G&l=50&co1=AND&d=PG01&s1=20090198673.PGNR.&OS=DN/20090198673RS=DN/20090198673)- Microsoft - Filed; Feb. 06 2008 – Assigned; Aug. 06 2009

Modeling Google's Florida Update and Universal Search (the following is a guest post from Terry Van Horne) A number of papers have come out of the SIGR conference and for me one of the most interesting is the paper from the Microsoft research team using Conditional Random Field (CRF) and contextual analysis (http://research.microsoft.com/pubs/81350/sigir09.pdf) (pdf) to determine query classification. The paper discusses some interesting uses for click data and query labeling . I found this paper especially intriguing in that as I read through it I kept thinking I was...

How search engines consider link relevance A good friend of mine sent me an interesting question a while back, “Dear Dave, can you give me some pointers on how search engines determine link intent?” Well sheeeeit… it’s hard to say what constitutes ‘intent’ when it comes to various aspects of linking and search engines. It really isn't that straight forward and understanding 'query intent' tends to be the most researched area for search peeps. And as far as patents/papers, I doubt there is really much out...

Every now and again there come along a list of peeps ‘Top SEO Blogs’ to which I am drawn being the SOSG that I am. Many times I read them and think, “Man does that list goddamn suck’ – lol… if they are personal lists or so-called ‘rankings’ they often don’t represent my personal must-have blogs in the SEO space…. Between my many (many, many) hours at Sphinn (http://sphinn.com) or getting my SEO newsletter (http://www.huomah.com/dojo/seo-newsletter.html) together, there is always a need for more and fresh content to...

A tale of two Twits (the following is a guest post from James Duthie)As an online marketer who enjoys dabbling in social media, last week was definitely not a good one in the land down under (Australia). In an industry that is still trying to establish itself as legitimate and credible (much like SEO had to), a scandal involving media celebrities, fake Twitter accounts and public slander was never going to be good for the collective reputation. And as entertaining as the story is,...

A ranting we will go, A ranting we will go… silly stuff SEOs seem not to know… a ranting we shall go… Hiya Kids… over the last while the spectre of LSI (latent semantic indexing) and SEO has raised its ugly head once more… It began with a piece my good friend Virginia wrote called; SEO strategy for semantic search (http://www.bruceclay.com/blog/archives/2009/07/seo_strategy_fo.html) - (a good post) which was based, in part on a post from SEO Phill (http://esseoo.com/is-google-a-semantic-search-engine-2-years-later/)(and comments on the...

(The following is a guest post from Te-ge Bramhall) When I was in college, I took a class called the Psychology of Advertising. Of all the ideas shared in that class, one in particular struck me when I first heard it. The professor was talking about billboards and commented that a good billboard only tries to convey one thing to the people reading it because people only have seconds to read and process what the billboard is advertising.

Do you know where to find prime link real estate? Brother Bill expertly covered (yet another) patent on page segmentation (http://www.seobythesea.com/?p=2141) the other day; this time from Yahoo. It is certainly an area that SEOs really might want to be paying more attention to these days. Considering that each of the big three have dabbled into it (to varying degrees) over the last ½ decade, there is every reason to believe that something might be here (all that ‘where there is smoke’… yada yada). Page...
