30 Nov This post is from from my other blog here While I am doing some quick takes here, I also thought it worth mentioning the hub-bub people are on about regarding a recent Google Labs experiment. The basic idea is letting users have some editorial control (reminds me of this (http://patft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=7096214.PN.&OS=PN/7096214&RS=PN/7096214)) in the form of a Digg-style control set. If you havent already, you can get basic details at; Google Experimental (http://www.google.com/experimental/a840e102.html) or Googlified (http://googlified.com/2007google-digg-style-experiment) and an expanded take at Venture Beat (http://venturebeat.com/2007/11/29/googles-first-social-search-step-your-vote-please/) (or Google it (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&newwindow=1&q=Google,+Digg+style,+buttons,+experiment))The main point for me is further reason to be paying attention to User Performance Metrics and Personalized Search. Remember what I was saying (/search-engines/search-engine-optimization/what-every-seo-should-know-about-personalized-search.html) the other day?Maybe someday the Google Toolbar or FireFox Browser (whom Google funds quite well) on your logged in, cross-device/platform Google account, will have something similar to a StumbleUpon thumbs up/down type of application. The below cited patent also describes as; a remove feature selectable object within a web browser application window. So via web interface or ultimately the toolbar, options avail; Sometimes the search results include a web page that the user deems undesirable. This web page may be deemed undesirable by the user because the web page is spam, the web page relates to content unrelated to the user's interests, the web page contains content that the user dislikes or finds offensive, or for some other reason. From; Removing Documents (http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PG01&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.html&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=%2220070043721%22.PGNR.&OS=DN/20070043721&RS=DN/20070043721)These are entirely possible scenarios and are once more, potential features attached to a persons Google account in the near future. There are many potential ranking mechanisms that I have been discussing of late that more and more warrant some consideration. The Series;Part I; Why Googles Personalized Search is important to you (/search-engines/search-engine-optimization/why-google-personalized-search-is-important-to-you.html)Part II; I have seen the future and it is VERY personal (/search-engines/search-engine-optimization/i-have-seen-the-future-and-it-is-very-personal.html)Part II; What every SEO should know about Google Personalized Search...
30 Nov This post is from from my other blog here I just wanted to throw a quick shout out and highlight a post from one whacky dude by the name of Michael Martinez (http://seo-theory.com/). For the uninitiated he is one smart fella with a penchant for ranting. How can a brother go wrong? Some folks like him, some dont. It sounds like my world. Anyway, I have for the most part, avoided this entire Google V. PaidLinks fiasco to this point. Until I have more time to write about it, I am staying in my cave on that one. What I do like is that Michael discusses some of the inherent flaws in the whole PageRank methodology. I am in complete agreement on that and have longed to see better usage of many of the systems/methods that exist out there for them to leverage. I certainly understand the addiction to a link-reliant system, I simply think they can do better. As he also notes, the TBPR was truly a useless metric until recently when Google put the light back on it. I have to wonder if that is its main purpose these days. I cant see that it is being used primarily for end users to decide on the value of a site. What is more likely is that it is being kept around as part of a real PR Campaign (as in public relations :0)Take a ride; Where to buy PageRankPassing LinksAll in all (another) good read and I thought to pass it along.
27 Nov This post is from from my other blog here Social Media Desire; all that Glitters is not GoldSo you fancy yourself a social creature do you? You get all warm and fuzzy inside when the mindless social media traffic hits your site, thrilled by the thought Digging your way to stardom? Are you unsure if using SMM is for you? Well, lets see if we cant put some reality to the beast that is the world of Social Media Marketing once and for all however unlikely that may sound. I recently started an ongoing dialogue with mhomey Jeff (Quip of Search Engine People) as he loves the SMM world and I brush it off with a hearty grunt on most occasions. Our path started in email chit chat and then he posted; 7 Benefits to Engaging in Social Media (http://www.searchenginepeople.com/blog/7-benefits-to-engaging-in-social-media-marketing.html) - which I thought was certainly aimed in my general direction and so I posted about it in my Beer Break a while ago (/news/latest/thursday-beer-break-nov-01.html)- to which he was nice enough to poke me back at the end of this post; (http://www.searchenginepeople.com/blog/if-youre-going-to-advertise-offline-make-sure-youre-well-represented-on-search-engines.html) Now, I believe it is worth mentioning that I am a believer in SMM having a place in the iMarketing toolbox, it is the value or weight it should receive in importance that I am not as convinced on as others thats my basic stance. So let us try another stab at it because I feel the experience is good for people sitting on both sides of the fence or on top of it. Once more I shall play the devils advocate and spike this creature with my lance until it behaves as it should. Lets get Anti-Social!
