Going beyond the pastA mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions. - Oliver Wendell Holmes A while back that ever popular topic emerged and once more.. SEO is dead (or does it suck? They’re kind of interchangeable). Has SEO really come to it's end? Before we start nailing that coffin too tightly shut, some introspection might be in order. If you’re an SEO that has lost your way… allow me to redirect (a little mental 301 for ya).For starters, it would seem that some SEOs want other people’s jobs … from conversions to social media marketing, to try and redefine the roll of an optimizer to that of an internet marketer (term encompassing all the disciplines). I say stop trying to move the goal posts my SEO jesters and look at how your job is evolving, because it is. I found...

Directory submissions done right Things have been quiet here on the trail this week as I have been a busy little bee. I have been writing posts (bunch of them 3/4 done...U know how it is) and messing with some data relating to some personalized/geo-located search experiments. I am also trying to get a new handbook together; this time on link building. And since I was in the groove, I wrote a few posts on foundational link building over on the SR Blog (http://seo.site-reference.com). So if you're looking for some strategies and resources for getting the most out of web directories, have a look; Directory link building concepts (http://seo.site-reference.com/how-to-get-the-most-from-web-directories/) List of top paid and free directories (http://seo.site-reference.com/list-of-free-and-paid-directories/) And what would I be if not resourceful? Here are some other related posts to keep you in the groove; The power of directories (http://www.searchenginepeople.com/blog/link-building-101-the-power-of-directories.html)- Search Engine People The role of directories in...

Mining for personalized search data Hiya kids… if you have a few moments to spare I want some peeps to do a few searches and send me the results. If you have a Google account (https://www.google.com/accounts/ManageAccount)with personalized search turned on, great… if not, still valid. I am looking for data from a variety of geographic locales (even OS and browser type have come into play). A Google patent recently came out which got me thinking about personalized search (http://www.huomah.com/search-engines/learn-seo/fire-horse-guide-to-personalized-search.html) once more. I started some basic data collection and was surprised.. so now I am doing more. If you agree to participate you will receive all the raw data (names removed) so you can also make your own analysis on it all… there are likely gro-graphic factors that will emerge as well (seems that way so far). This is no definitive imperial scientific undertaking, more...

the Social Media Advertising Council seeks to set the bar Poor SEO is becoming the hillbilly cousin when it comes to the path for legitimacy. Seems the SMM peeps are forging their own set - or maybe not. Today I cam across this press release (http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=prnw.20080917.NE33513&show_article=1) concerning the Social Media Advertising CouncilThey’re mandate is apparently to;“…create a common vocabulary, standard buying units and uniform measurement methods for marketing within social media. As social network advertising revenues hit an estimated $1.825 billion in 2009, out of a total online advertising market of $30 billion in the U.S. (eMarketer, May 2008,) there is an urgent need among social media buyers and their clients to understand how to quantify and value engagement and exposure on social networks.” Now I am not one to be petty… or maybe I am… but last I checked not only are engagement metrics a fuzzy proposition, but branding...

How Cuil is that? It seems phrase based IR (PaIR) is back – momentarily at least. Super search geek Bill Slawski had a post today about a late entry (http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-adv.htm&r=1&p=1&f=G&l=50&d=PTXT&S1=7,426,507.PN.&OS=pn/7,426,507&RS=PN/7,426,507) to the set of patents from Google on the topic (see; phrase based indexing and clusters (http://www.seobythesea.com/?p=1120)), which is as good a reason as any to revisit it. Simply put it is one of the methods for understanding relevance of concepts and topical anomalies through phrases and semantics. It is a probabilistic learning model which seeks to add more relevance to the ranking process. A large number of people search in phrases, not singular keywords and this method certainly had some merit. For more see these; Phrase based optimization resources (http://www.huomah.com/search-engines/algorithm-matters/phrase-based-optimization-resources.html) (here on the trail) Phrase based indexing and retrieval (http://www.reliable-seo.com/knowledge-base/Technical-SEO/Phrase-Based-Indexing-and-Retrieval-2.html) (Reliable SEO) Phrase based IR – a second look (http://www.vanseodesign.com/blog/seo/phrase-based-optimization-a-second-look/) (Van SEO Design)...

Who cares if you don't care... someone might... Well, it has been a few months since I stepped back from the abyss (http://www.huomah.com/Personal/Family-Life/Social-Media-Cash-Grab.html) that is the social side of my SEO passion. An enjoyable break that spilled over onto the blog in the form of more casual posting, it must be a summer thing (as I took a few months off last year as well). I totally advise it for everyone from time to time… recharging the batteries is good for ya! And you wouldn’t believe the traffic we had for that – Oh no you didn’t – video last week….lol… wonder what all those kids looking for the video and lyrics thought of the rest of the site? Must've had a few peeps confused... Anyway, after giving some thought to what’s next – a heads up is in order… not sure why.. just friggen felt...

Well…I made it!! That’s right, the summer is done and the kids are in school. That particularly exciting as our little guy is full time now which means 8 years of having the kids around the home office is over and I am ready to be kicking the proverbial butt!! Sure, I love the little rug rats, but it has mad things a bugger during the day time. I cannot bein to tell ya’ll how freakin excited I am to see how the other half lives (and works ;0) – I haven’t been blogging much the last few weeks, but that was to soak up the final moments with the little freaks. We shall be returning to our regular programming shortly. … yeee haaa!! Oh and BTW, is Matt working the keyword ‘Google Chrome’ or what? Hee hee…. I was reading his post (http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/google-chrome-web-browser/) thinking,...
