Hot on the heels of Microsoft's recent deal with social network phenomenon Facebook - Google has announced an alliance with other social networks including Friendster, LinkedIn, Hi5, Ning and Plaxo. The OpenSocial initiative aims to attract developers to a Google API that will allow them to create applications that will be compatible with all the social networks in the alliance.

The question remains - will a generic social network application framework attract developers away from the communities that carry the real traffic...maybe if OpenSocial can get all the serious brands on board (i.e. MySpace) - they'll have a real chance...
